Set Up Events

Sunny
Total Time = 6h 10m 38s
Overall Rank = 372/599
Age Group = MC
Age Group Rank = 12/36
Pre-race routine:

Stayed in town the night before so I got an opportunity to drive the bike and run course. This helped for the modify run course. Woke up 0430 ate oatmeal and packed up. Arrived at T1 about 0615 or so and went through pre race check off. Caught the shuttle to swim start with some friends and watch the IMers swim by.
Event warmup:

Warmed up a bit in water and had a gel 30 minutes prior to race start.
Swim
  • 29m 16s
  • 2078 yards
  • 01m 25s / 100 yards
Comments:

Overall swam well stayed in left side of channel, RD waived mandatory turn bouy due to current and coast guard recommendations
What would you do differently?:

I swung wide on the dog leg turn after making the turn. Sighted on a site buoy but this got me back to the main channel and I lost some of my advantage.
Transition 1
  • 05m 2s
Comments:

I dropped 56 secs off my T1 time from last year. I used a stripper this year and had the suit totally removed. This made the 400 yd run to T1 easier and I was able to put the suit in the T1 bag first thing since I had it folded it up while jogging to the bike.
What would you do differently?:

Overall went well, I did not sprint this year and my heart rate was much lower getting on bike. I need to look at getting new bike shoes.
Bike
  • 2h 57m 57s
  • 56 miles
  • 18.88 mile/hr
Comments:

Coming into town you cross over a draw bridge with rubber mats over the grating. The mats were horrible and almost caused me to wreck. I am confident they will replace the mats, if not, next year I will have to take a practice ride over the grating to determine the lesser of the two evils. The grating has small .25 inch nobs on it that I would worry about punctures. Coming into the T2 there are a series of sharp turns which needed to be taken with caution. Witness one crash on the first corner with less than .5 mile to T2
What would you do differently?:

Overall I needed to push harder. Good pace but on 421 I think I backed down on the false flats.
Transition 2
  • 03m 48s
Comments:

T2 was good. I had a little trouble getting my garmin off but the volunter helped as he took my bike.
What would you do differently?:

Learn to dismount leaving my shoes on the bike
Run
  • 2h 34m 36s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 11m 48s  min/mile
Comments:

I had planned on doing 1 mile run/ walk through the fueling areas, however, the fueling areas were not at 1 mile increments as identified in the pre race litature. I fell off my nutrition plan which really slowed me up around mile 6-8. I regained but it threw a little glitch into the plan which I should of reacted to sooner upon realizing stations were not set up every mile. I failed to anticipate the impact till things started to fall apart and then I had to adopt a new strategy.
What would you do differently?:

I need to focus more on my run development. I am not a runner by any means but I believe a 10 min/mile can be achieved which will be my goal for 2013.
Post race
Warm down:

Post race massage, hydration, and of course pizza.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My running practice needs to increase along with more speed workouts. I think I spent to much time on focusing on endurance.

Event comments:

I love this course for my ability and the time of year. Run course was modified this year but I am confident they will work the logistics out. My increase in volume this year I think paid off and course the support of my loving was instrumental in a good season and race.

Course: It was an out and back with a "loop" in the middle of the course that you had to do on the way out and again on the way back. This caused alot of confusion and congestion at the shared enterance/exit point to the loop. There was also a shared fueling station which had the volunteers and racers running all over. Other wise the course was largely through a park and well shaded. Nice course.

Totally agree with you about the mats. They were horrible! I hope they figure that part out!

10 min miles? You've got it! It'll take a little work, but heck, it takes work to get to this point.

Nice race!
