Pre-race routine:

This is the first time that Zoomers (tke local running club) has done a trail race, and they did it pretty well. They are still working out some kinks in the new electronic timing chip system that they recently purchased.

Comments:

I started out behind a few people and in the middle. I didn't hit the start button on the watch (mistake 1). Bad spot. A bit slow off the line, so I jumped to the right and excelerated around a few folks. Then I kept that pace (mistake 2). Headed into the trails and figured out I had not started the watch, so I started it then (mistake 3). Kept going a little faster then normal, and I knew it was not good, but couldn't talk myself into slowing a bit (mistake 4, this was the major one). At mile one I heard someone behind me say 8:37. (yikes, that is not good) I finally slowed a bit, settled in and figured I might be OK. Ran a bit behind the PCHS Girls track team, passed one of them. By mile 2 I knew that the tank was emptying and I needed a miracle. Slowed more and hit the water station. Slogged through until the end of the trails (mistake 5, cowboy up, Dagnabbit!), picked up the pace and finished at a sprint to pass the 4 ladies in front of me.
What would you do differently?:

Pacing, pacing, pacing! I've got to get this settled. I can't get rattled, taken out of MY RACE, and think I can do more than I can. Hopefully, I have learned my lesson.
Post race
Warm down:

Wander around the empty field and dry heave a bit. Catch my breath and go find Ann.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I have to get out of my head and just run. The mental part killed me in the final mile.

Event comments:

Zoomers does a pretty good job, the local races are well done.

Course: Lollipop loop through Oyster Creek Park. I try to run here about once a week, it is beautiful here. We started at the park drive in entrance, ran a few hundred feet around the parking loop (crushed rock), then cut right onto the trail, which is crushed rock and dirt/packed sand. Finished out the same trail head, cut right through the grass to the finish chute.

I predict that you will be running 8:30s as your normal 5k pace ( rather than your oops pace) very soon!

Great job, Chris!

Trail runs are always slightly to significantly more difficult than a road race anyway. I love that you have pulled some learning to apply to the next race. I think  your run plan in combination with your things to work on from race, will set you up for some really great results. Pacing, pacing, PACING!

Keep it up!

Sometimes these races are the ones that lead to our next PR, Chris.  Way to finish strong at the end!

What an awesome race name ... and straight-up solid experience for you. Every race is a good race; it's what you do with it, and you've done in it, and with it, just fine. CONGRATS!!!

I think you did a good job. I see why you identified the mistakes that you did, but as someone else pointed out, that quick pace may soon become your pace. We have to push it a little to find out what we actually have in the tank. Just as my tank actually has a quart or two more left when the needle is below empty, I think we also often have a little more left to give than we think we do.

Awesome race!

Good race, Chris, even though you pointed out a few mistakes.  But hey, experience is the best teacher, right?  And it seems to be a lot easier to learn from our mistakes than by doing something correct the first time.  Next year you will destroy this race!! It's great you were able to summon up some extra strength and power to sprint to the finish, well done!
