Pre-race routine:

Usual breakfast, half bagel/peanut butter, shot blocks with caffeine and water. Banana hour before.
Event warmup:

Air temp in low 50s, so it was cool. Wetsuit legal so wetsuit kept warm on beach waiting for start.
Swim
  • 12m 30s
  • 656 yards
  • 01m 54s / 100 yards
Comments:

Wearing the suit is always a plus- even for short distance. Even with chop, I shaved 6 minutes off swim time from exact same course in the spring race, so i'm happy with that. Could see all the way to bottom. Very clear water.
What would you do differently?:

Swim harder and finish swim stronger. Probably lost a minute the last 100 yards.
Transition 1
  • 05m
Comments:

Bike was very close to mount line so wore shoes to line and mounted "safely" vs. flying mount. Didn't want to cause pile up at line. Got shoes fastened in first 100 yards and was off.
What would you do differently?:

Had wetsuit unzipped fine coming out of water, but just takes a little strength to rip out of it. For the first time, my ankle timing chip got in way. Usually I can strip it off right over. In future, will probably have wetsuit leg OVER the timing ankle chip so it's not in way.
Bike
  • 56m
  • 17 miles
  • 18.21 mile/hr
Comments:

Should have gone harder.
What would you do differently?:

Bike harder.
Transition 2
  • 01m
Comments:

My best transition ever. Hundred yards from dismount line, I undo left shoe strap, then right. Remove left foot and put on top of shoe after it swings back up, then removed right foot and swung leg over seat post and came in slow and dismounted fine. Pushed bike to rack and this was my best dismount ever. Helmet OFF Visor ON, wipe feet on mat, pull on the Pearl Izumi Iso Transitions, and run out of T2.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. Best T ever.
Run
  • 23m
  • 3.11 miles
  • 07m 24s  min/mile
Comments:

Always wish/think I could have run harder. I guess I ran "hard enough" to not get passed by anoyone, but I didn't catch many people either. Could probably do the 5K in a minute or 2 less with speed work.
What would you do differently?:

Run harder coming in.
Post race
Warm down:

As I crossed finish, very pleasantly surprised to be greeted by my wife and 3 kids! That was an unexpected lift! Warm down included banana, sports drink and walk about chasing my kids through the Spinnaker night club area hosting event.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Me.

Event comments:

Very good race for beginners OR elites tuning up for bigger races. Had all skill levels. Race well organized and covers parts of IMFL and Gulf Coast Triathlon courses. Race is usually very well done each year in the spring and fall.

Course: Water was great visibility, but there was chop coming in over sandbars and rolling swells out on course. It was not violent by any means, and actually good experience to have the water conditions "non-perfect" to prepare for future events where water might be choppy.

Cross wind riding on the road right off the beach (Thomas Drive) but it was ok ride. 3 loops. Well marked and well manned. Plenty of cones and signs. I always feel I could ride better/harder throughout bike. Passed by tons of stronger bikers.
