Subject: Moving back east

Hey all.  My wife has accepted a position with PowerBar as the Mid-Atlantic region Nutritional Tech Rep (so hopefully many of you will get to know her!) that gives us a fair amount of leeway for areas to live in and we're exploring Delaware as on option.  I've been working on my degree at Oregon State University and have to find a school to transfer to and have been interested in UD (I'm a vet using the post-9/11 GI Bill and UD waves out of state tuition for us!). . .so the Newark area looks like a place we'd choose.  We're both avid triathletes, though she's more of a long-course girl and I prefer 1/2's and under.

So, I guess I'm asking if any of you would be willing to share your thoughts on the tri-scene including standalone cycling (mtb'ing), OWS, and running.  How are the roads?  Decent shoulders?  General thoughts?  Any and all input is welcome!  Thanks so much.

We live in MD just across the MD- DE line about 6 miles from Newark. It's an area called Fair Hill. I grew up in and outside of Baltimore. My wife is a UD grad. We have been here for 14 years now. It's a great area for cycling both road and Mountain biking and now cyclocross. I started with sprint and Olympic distance tris but really grew to love cycling. I race in cat 5 road races (cat 4 next season) and crits. If interested I would be happy to give you the local racing sites. As for mountain biking there are two nearby areas: Fair Hill Natural Resource Center and White Clay. There are a lot of good cyclists in the area. Just check out Strava segments in the area an you will see some of the times and routes. There are opportunities for OWS in the Chesapeake, Susquehanna River an Lums Pond. There a bunch of Multi-sport clubs in the area as well. If interested I can give you the club names that I know of.I hope this helps and would be happy to give you any other info you need.Good luck,Brandon

Here are some Delaware resources:

MTN Bike:  http://www.trailspinners.org/

Road Bike:  http://www.whiteclaybicycleclub.org/

Tri Clubs:  http://www.bricksmultisport.com/ , http://www.tridawgs.blogspot.com/

Running:  http://races2run.com/

Tri Events:  http://www.piranha-sports.com/

As far as the roads, I live down south in Dover and we have a large Amish community so most roads have large shoulders (for the buggies), but I'm not sure about up north; it is more congested up that way.  Delaware is also pushing hard for bike lanes on most roads.

Newark is OK, but you may want to look into the Middletown area too.  Not quite as congested but still within close commuting distance to UD.

Also, my tri-team, Bricks Multisport (link above) does open water swims at Lake Como in Smyrna twice a week betwen May and Sept.  I can give you more info if needed.

Thanks for the responses guys!  Well, my wife is now out in Hockessin staying with her brother as she gets the hang of area and her new job (if you see the yellow PowerBar car, that's her!)  I'm headed out there for Christmas and will have my first chance to look around. . .I can't wait.

Not a suggestion on where to live but Wilmington De has some of the nicest running you will find anywhere. Park at Brandywine Zoo and follow the trails through Alopacas Park and Rockford Park and Park Drive. It's really nice. If you let me know when you're around I'd be glad to join you on a run.

Hi-

I moved to southern Delaware (affectionately known as "Slower Lower") about a year and half ago and I never realized what a large active community there was in the Lewes/Rehoboth area- but as soon as I started searching, I found a lot of resources.  There are several running clubs that meet weekly/biweekly all year long, there are people that meet several times per week for road cycling in the summer (or around tri season so april/may until sept/oct) and some that meet for mtb in the winter, biweekly OWS in the summer, and races galore.  There are running races all year long (5k-marathon), and a large selection of tris in southern DE, MD, and PA. Not to mention highly knowledgeable athletes (many ironman distance athletes) and great people.  I highly recommend it! Good luck!
