So, the end of the Eastern Seaboard is nigh.  Or maybe...

OK...so the white one is mine.  But seriously, based on this forecast map they have no freakin' idea where it's going.  And just what the hell is the "Euro model" everyone is talking about that slams this thing right on top of my house in Baltimore?  So we AMERICANS can't forecast our own damn hurricanes anymore, and we're outsourcing to Europe???

Anyone making any preparations, other than watching Jim Cantore get pelted by 50 mph winds and sand?  (seriously, that guy is a weather BAMF; "Jim, the worst weather in the world right now is <here>, how fast can you get there?")

Power outages from fallen trees on power lines are the main concern for me (southern Vermont), so I'm making sure the candles, matches and flashlights are readily accessible. Also making sure the coolers are clean and there is ice so I can keep food from spoiling if (when) the power goes out.

I will fill the bathtub with water and have a bucket handy. It allows us to flush, should we encounter such trouble.

I live on a sidehill so flooding will not be a major concern. The basement may get a little wet, that's all. But after tropical storm Irene ripped Vermont apart, I am worried about whether we are prepared for another round of heavy rain and flooding. I am hoping this storm loses power before it hits land, wherever that may be.

Irene took out a lot of the weaker trees, so hopefully that leaves the stronger ones standing. My house is surrounded by large maples and oaks and they are quite close to the house. I'm hoping nothing comes crashing down.

You guys were decimated by Irene! We were coastal and ONLY lost power for 5 days. Simple tree cleaning stuff locally, but the rivers in VT were littered with downfall.

I have to spend the weekend putting away deck furniture, tieing down grills, filling gas tanks and maybe buy a generator. I keep thinking I don't need one, but in reality, 5 days of absolutely NO power really sucked.

I agree its a little early!  But considering the last two big storms I was without power 7+ days, yeah, we can get hit pretty hard. its expected to hit the Bay area in one model.

Should be amusing at the grocery store tomorrow. I'm sure people will be stocking up on bottled water and canned goods, as if the world is coming to an end.

Well, in the 20 minutes I watched the Weather Channel this morning, they loosely predicted up to 25 million people without power and all 7 major gasoline refineries in the mid-Atlantic going into "cold shut down" (that doesn't sound good) which means gasoline shortages.  World ending, no.  Major inconveniences yes.

Agreed...off to the liquor store!

They're calling it Frankenstorm. Apparently, Hurricane Sandy is supposed to collide with a storm system from the west and a cold front from the north when it hits. In Philly, they're warning people to be prepared to be without power for two weeks as widespread power outages are expected.

So difficult to tell what the real impact will be, but it seems we're definitely in store for 3+ days of rain. The storm is expected to hit the Jersey Shore during a high tide and full moon -- that could cause some real problems.

People lost their homes. Drive around for a half hour around my town and there are still remnants of houses destroyed by Irene that haven't been taken down yet. I guess people couldn't afford the cost. Bridges were destroyed and washed away. It's all very sad, and I can't believe we're in for another round.

+1

But I'm not worried about my food lol.

My biggest concern is missing out on my Monday night and Wendsday night runs.

I'm right under one of the two teal lines, but far enough inland that I'm only worried about rain and maybe some snow if it's hitting around Atlantic City.  If we get hit directly, it should be just rain and wind.  If it hits in the mid-Atlantic, they are forcasting the merging storm will yield snow in the Appalachians.  Close enough to me that I'm worried.

I read a neat description yesterday - snor'eastercane.

We are always somewhat prepped.  Biggest risk is a long term power loss (besides a tree falling on the house), but I will fill the freezer with freezer bags of water.  This way we have a way of keeping things on ice.

Right now I am not too worried.  I suspect the track of the storm will change.

Maryland always jumps the gun on storms. As a kid there, I must've missed 6-8 school days from jumping the gun on snowstorms that didn't materialize.

And they always hit the booze.

I'm hoping for a big hit so insurance companies stop hammering Florida since we haven't had a hurricane since 2005 and really it's not been a typical thing that FL gets hurricanes until the last 20 years or so. Houston to Pensacola always got them but FL on historical tracks was rather minimal.

VA was declared already, too.  The county I live in has canceled things for Monday.  With this reaction, I expect we get 2 inches of rain.

I agree!  total overreaction.  But I must say as a teacher, I know the snow days have gotten to be minimal...we haven't used up our days in awhile, minus 2009.

Holy crap on the refineries.  Damn. Shoulda gone yesterday to the grocery store. I should come hang out with you Josh b/c Looney's is close by!

No, their argument will be "2005?  Well then we're over due.  Your premium just went up 20%."
