I was on my long run today which is 4 x 4mile loop for 16mi.  I got a call from home when I was coming in to finish lap 3 that I "had to come home" so I came in after three laps.  Will I get anything out of running about 5 miles later tonight?  Does it in any way make up for cutting my run short since it's the same day?  I finished the run around 3 and I will probably run again around 9.

Miles are mile, volume is volume...I've heard some coaches recommend that people do multiple runs during the day, or more short runs during the week instead of doing a long run on one day. I'd say you'll definitely "get something" out of your run tonight...If nothing else, peace of mind.

It's not exactly the same as doing all 16 straight through, but still go for it. It'll help you. Where you would want to reconsider this is if it's going to interfere with other workouts.

Sometimes this is a bad idea.  This doesn't sound like one of those times.  I agree with the others.

How is the rest of your training going?I know you might want to finish your workout, but (1) your workout was 16 miles, not 12 and then 4, and (2)what's the benefit of sh!tcanning your workout and putting your family first?

How often do your workouts get cut short?  If almost never, then why bother.  Call it for the day and get a better workout tomorrow.
