Joestop, congratulations on the weight loss. Your BMI is 23.5, which is in the healthy range for a 5'10" male. A healthy BMI, according to CDC and NIH guidelines, is between 18.5 and 24.9, which corresponds to a weight of 137-174lbs for you. Keep in mind obesity is epidemic in this country. I noticed that when I went to a school function tonight for my middle school kids and saw all those heavy, unhealthy looking parents, and unfortunately obese kids.

I'm 5'10" - at my heaviest I was 190. I started running and doing the Insanity workout and dropped down to 156 at my lightest. I run more, but have added weights (as well as swimming and biking) to my routine. Now, I'm an even 170-174. I haven't dropped below, and I try not to get over.

I'd say check out some weight lifting programs (www.menshealth.com has some good ones), add some muscle and definition and you'll be amazed at what your body can look like.

Oh, and I'd say that people that don't work out, exercise, or pudgy might not be the best judge of character. Congratulations - welcome to your new lifestyle. It's fun - I won't go back!

My take is a bit outside the others posting -

1. If your goal is how you see yourself - look in the mirror

2. If it's how others see you, ask and go for that number.

2. If your goal is tri-ing faster, go by times and let the weight work itself out. Sometimes folks focus so hard on loosing weight the loose muscle and it effects their performance. I am more fit for marathons at a lower weight than triathlons.

It all about what your goal is.

Certainly a good question!

6' 138.  previously around 150 since high school too many years ago. Have been losing weight ever since my knee gave up about 6 months ago. Less exercise for me means less weight. Im just not as hungry I guess. Still bmi is just on the edge of normal.

Neither person who told me I was looking a little drawn when I was at my thinnest was overweight. And they were right - my face below a certain weight range is pretty unattractive even if all my numbers are still solidly normal. Not "jealous" or "unhappy with their own weight" - they were just a little tacky.

Which is what it comes down to - it is tacky and rude to comment negatively on someone else's appearance. Just like it is nasty to make assumptions about someone's mental state based on their body size.

@ 6' 0, 150lbs, I don't get any comments, but I was 138 in HS and college.

You tall guys under 150 - sorry but you're freaks..lol  I'm 5'10" and the lowest I've been was 188 lbs, and Bod Pod told me at that time I was 18% BF.  So even if I would have dropped my BF to 10%, I would still be around 170 lbs.

At the beginning of summer I was 190 lbs and I am 5' 10".  I was in the overweight category for sure.

Well since tri-ing, I have lost 26 lbs and am down to 164.  I feel that I could lose a few more lbs, basically some leftover mid-section in my opinion.

However, I'm starting to get a bunch of comments like, 'don't lose anymore weight' and 'boy, you're getting really thin'  Even one older lady told me that my weight loss made me look older!!!  That's the last thing I want to hear...getting closer to 40...(well, maybe not the LAST thing).

By weight charts etc, it says I'm fine.  But did I over do it?  And what is a good healthy weight in your opinion?  I'm NOT trying to get in IM triathlete shape.  Just age grouper, short distance for now.

Thanks for your time and opinions.

So losing weight will make your wrinkles show more. Especially if you were heavier and lost weight in the face. Just how it goes.

Otherwise, WHO is saying you are too thin? Are they thin, athletes, themselves?

Most Americans see someone who is of the proper weight as being "too skinny", because most of our population is 20-30-ETC. pounds overweight.

When people tell me I'm too thin, it is usually someone who isn't a runner, etc. They don't understand that athletes like to keep all the fat off. I'm not too thin BTW, I'm 5'4" and 125 pounds, with about 21% body fat. I'm plenty healthy. But I could lose 5 pounds for sure.

I believe that they are just not used seing you that way. They will change their minds after a period of time.

To thin? I don't think so. I am 5'9 @ 32 and weight 143 now. This past summer, my race weight was 135-136.

Did I look to skinny? or as matter of fact, am I still right now? I don't think so. All I can say is that I feel healthy and have lots of energy. Let poeple think what the want and just be yourself. If you like the way you are and the feel of it (your heatlh), so be it. All body types are different and will react differently in comparaison of your height vs weight.

cheers!

Hey mtx! Having seen you in person, I never would have guessed you were around 135-145. While you are lean, you do carry muscle, so you look "bigger" than you weight might denote. If that makes sense.

Anyways, some might read your height/weight and think you are "thin", but you don't look "thin". If that makes sense. I hope none of that was an insult!

No worries. I am just trying to give the op a view from the other spectrum.

cheers!

Subject: RE: Am I losing too much weight?

This thread is very timely for me.  Just today, I ran into an ex-coworker who has not seen me for 2 years.  2 years ago I was at 240 pounds.  I'm 6'2 and I hover around 180 but working towards 170.

Anyways, the ex-coworker was at first happy that I lost the weight but then said that anymore loss and I will look sick or "cancery".  Not really the image that I'm going for.  I don't put alot of weight (see what I did there) into comments like this.  Most of the time they are not coming from endurance athletes, or even athletes in general.  Most of the comments I get are from people who are out of shape or "don't have the time" or "think I'm crazy" or "happy with the way they look" and that's fine... for them.

We work hard and triathlon is not about weight loss.  It's a lifestyle.  For some of us, it is a major part of who we are, who we were, and who we want to become.  Triathlon pulled me out of a very depressed time in my life and most, if not all, aspects of my life have been improoved.  I'm a better husband, a better father, a better employee (unless I'm on BT), and I think a better person over all.

To the OP'er and to everyone else, congrats on the weight loss.  As long as you are happy, who cares what everyone else says.

Thanks for all the replies, I really appreciate it.

Just last night I had two more people tell me "Don't lose anymore weight."  They were pretty serious.  But from what I've seen and read and how I've been progressing, another 10 lbs still wouldn't be close to a problem.

This is what I figure -  1)  In a few weeks, I can get back to the gym and tone up a bit - broken finger now.  2)  My clothes are loose fitting - just recently got 4 new pair of pants, so I think that will help.  3)  I figure they'll get used to the 'new' me and it won't be such a shock.

AND 4)  I love the weight-loss, I love the exercise, I love the new diet, I love that my BP is down, and I can't wait for my first sprint in Dec.  So there!  Wink

When people start asking if you're sick, you are 10lbs away from race weight.

When they ask if you have cancer, you're 5lbs from race weight.

When they schedule an intervention, you're ready to race!
