OK, I know that there a large number of variables with this question. However, I have read that my run should improve 2 to 3 seconds per lb. per mile. that I lose (taking out improved cardiovascular fitness). Does this sound right?  How much faster will my bike improve per lb. lost?

Thanks!

A 2 second per mile gain on the run for each pound lost seems to be the accepted general rule.  Lots of other variables will influence your speed gain, though.

Weight loss won't help you significantly on the bike on flat roads.  You'll benefit a bit on hills.

You should look and find the Daniels excel chart that you can enter variables including weight, temps and such to see how times/pace changes with different changes.

Losing weight will help you run faster, and go up hills faster. If you reduce your drag by being overall small that can help but losing a few pounds won't do that. Bike improvement will vary depending on the terrain you ride on.

Weighing less will help you in hot and humid races as your body will cool better.

Not entirely true... Any technical course where you have accelerations, reduced mass will be helpful. Also, do not underestimate the additional weight and the effect that will have on the position you can hold comfortably on the bike

I'm probably the fattest guy you'll ever see run a sub 20 5k. I'm 6'0 and 180 lbs ~15%BF at my most recent triathlon (I measured 3.07mi via satellite) and clocked an average 6:32 min/mi. So if I lost 15 lbs of fat you're saying I can run a 6:00 for the whole thing? I might be motivated to eat less now.

I would say this is not entirely true.  In my experince, when I ride with friends who are heavier than me, if we are going downhill and neither of us is pedaling, my heavier friend always pulls ahead of me.

I ran a 20:34 5k during a sprint triathlon this year at 6'1.5 and 195-200lbs

"Probably one of the". We're few and far in between haha. Most people running 20's and under are starting to slim out quite a bit.

So, right now, I am 5'8" and weigh 210 lbs.  I can run 7:30 pace for a 5K, and bike 18 mph on a relatively flat 56 mile road course (Racine HIM). If I lose 30 lbs, I know that my run will improve dramatically. So if my 5K run improves to 6:30 pace, then how fast does my bike improve?

Thanks Again for everyone's replies.

Depends entirely how much you ride, and the bike workouts you do.
