I read in USA Today Michael Phelps had one of his longest training days last month. 18,400 meters or about 11.5 miles in one training session. I guess my 4 sets of 400m isn't enough.

Are you trying to be an Olympic swimmer or just finish an olympic triathlon? I suspect its closer to the latter.

Swim teams starting in High School will do at least 5K meters per day. In busy weeks, HS and college teams will do, maybe 10K meters per day. Obviously Phelps is going well above that. I read somewhere along the way that former Russian Olympic distance swimmers would do about 25K per day.

There are efficiencies to being in the water a lot. Just like there are efficiencies to having time in the saddle and efficiencies to developing long run skills.

Is 4x400 enough? If you're doing sprints and perhaps Olympic tris, sure. But don't expect to make the 2008 US Olympic swim team doing that.

You haven't been logging, so I can't tell!

Hmmm. I wonder how many days it would take me to swim 18,400 meters...

I was just commenting on how much he swam in one day. That's insane. I'm swimming enough.

Terry... you should use the TRAINING LOG section of BT. That way, you can track everything you have done. It makes a nice little graph for you and everything.

KSH is right. once you start using the log you are gonna love it. its my favorite part of BT. you can look back and see exactly what you are doing, with graphs and totals(for the whole year and the last couple months specifically).

BTW, it would take me puite a long time to put in 18K yards, thats a whole lot of swimming.

i heard he did worse - something like a long distance im set (maybe 8km), or like a timed 20k.

But he's a 400m IM swimmer, not a 10k OW swimmer. So the distance swimmers probably go further.
