Subject: thin skin - obstacle race

So my 72yo Dad wants to do an obstacle course race... we're looking to do a 5K next weekend.

He does zumba and tabata and other exercise classes 1-2 hours each day and otherwise keeps himself fit but hasn't done a 5K (or any "race") since ROTC.  I'm actually not too concerned about his ability to do the race, he's probably more fit than me.

His main concern is comfort.  He's a cold blooded dude - his only short sleeve shirts are his undershirts which he wears everyday (even the 100* days) under his long sleeve button downs.  He's also concerned that his old man skin (on his knees) will not hold up to crawling through the mud.

Any advice on what my Dad should wear?  running tights? or will that cause chafing once embedded with the mud?

His regular "workout" clothes are cotton T and cotton cargo shorts but he's looking to buy some dri-fit duds for keeping himself happy on the course.  thoughts?  it will hopefully be a 60-65* clear day.

What about football pants with knee pads.

Knee pads are a must. I did my first "Warrior Dash" in September and my knees took a beating. The mud in Virginia was a bit rocky. Other than that, a decent pair of running shoes that you can destroy and clothes that won't weigh you down in the water. That's an impressive 72 year old father you have. Best of luck.

we're signed up for Sunday!!  And my brother will join!

Dad still hasn't found "bottoms" he wants to protect his legs but got a compression shirt so I encouraged him to wear it to his exercise classes this week to make sure it is comfy before race day -- teaching him "nothing new on race day."

When I did Muddy Buddy and Warrior Dash, I found my knees were fine -- once I gave up that is -- sunk in, and slithered on my belly, and used my feet not knees.  but my skin is 30+ years younger than his.   Maybe he just needs some poly long johns?

I did Tough Mudder FL in December last year. Now, it's way longer than these 5Ks, but I was glad I had some decent gloves/maybe with rubber on palms like from Home Depot or something for climbing wooden splintered walls etc. I did not regret having those gloves. We didn't wear knee pads, but I thought knee high socks would be good to keep dirt/mud out of shoes, but it did no good at all and I would wear short socks next time (assuming it's not freezing cold etc).  Some of the guys in our group also used duct tape and tape their laces/shoes but that was worthless in the first 1/4 mile. Good luck and have fun.

There are tactical uniforms he could buy used at a military surplus store for about $40 for a long sleeve "combat shirt" top and a pair of "combat pants" with integrated knee pads.

The sleeves and shoulders are heaviers 50/50 nylon ripstop and cotton an the body is a breathable, lighter fabric. They are kinda like a football jersey.

The pants have flexible plastic integrated knee pads and "cinchable" cuffs. Extra bonus: he'll look all "commando".  Wink

Tom!  That is so awesome!  I forwarded your post to my Dad.

He still wears his battered old army green parka jacket for work around the house... maybe some new military gear is in order!  Mom might not be so keen...  I think it looks mighty fine!
