I wanted to see what everyone feels is the best job/business for a Triathlete. I am thinking one that affords time to train and race, but still have the finances for the gear! Maybe it is the job/business you have!

I've got a pretty good situation.  I run the personal training department at a Gold's Gym, and I have a part-time coaching business.  I have flexible hours at the gym, so I can leave for a run or bike during the day sometimes, and when the weather's bad, I can hit a spin bike or treadmill at work.  The only bad part is the money.  Changing to this after 20+ years in construction management meant a huge pay cut, so I don't have as much money for gear and races, but I don't necessarily need it, because my schedule has allowed me to upgrade the engine.

Fortunately, my wife has a very good job, so in the end, I'm just a kept man anyway.

Definitely NOT my job.

I'm in the Navy, stationed aboard a submarine.  Having the job I have and a triathlon habit is damned near impossible.  I can't take time off from work at will to go to a race.  I'm often eating pathetic lunches, just to make time to get in a swim or brick.  Most times, when I get home at night, I'm too damned tired to run or ride.

Then there's the monetary aspect.  I have a wife and 3 kids ans a single income.  Once all my bills are paid, there's not a whole lot left over to spend on entry fees or gear.  What is left usually gets spent on the kids in some way.

It's tough, but I try to manage. I will admit to getting jealous when I read about folks getting new gear that seems completely out of my budgetary reach.  We can't all have everything.

Perhaps the struggle to play the game makes it that much sweeter.

This ^^^   When there aren't major disasters currently going on  requiring a week of deployment at a time or more.  And I would add firefighter for a city.

I have a couple car washes and I negotiated a pretty good gig as part-time (20 hours) publisher of a couple newspapers on some niche magazines. Since I am somewhat established in both busiesses, I am able to devote 2-3 hours per day to training. I am also flexible to travel pretty much whenever I want. Oh, and I am a pilot and have my own airplane that can haul my bike and wife. As someone who still needs and wants to work....I think I have created a good situation for the triathlete endeavor. The sport keeps finances pretty tight, but so far it is worth it.

Cop... Right now, I work Wednesday-Saturday from 7am-5pm. It's about the home life and not necessarily your job. I do not have children and my wife works a full time job. I cannot beat having 3 days off a week where I have zero obligations. I forgot to say, my days off are days where the wife works which makes it lonely at home... Why not train!

OP--my job is near perfect IMO.  I work 7p-7a 3 nights a week as an Emergency Room Registered Nurse in Miami.

I can train 7 days a week, 365 days a year if I want.  I "know people" if I get hurt or sick. The pay affords my tri habit.

My goal is to meet a wealthy widow at the gym and serve as her personal boy-toy. It's a tough job but someone's got to do it.

Failing that, consulting. I set my own hours and as long as I hit deadlines I have incredible freedom.

I married a doctor and now instead of teaching I'm a stay at home dad. Great schedule, plenty of recovery time...

Hard to get weekend days off.

I'm a firefighter which typically means I work 10 days a month. I also have about 90 minutes a day at work to workout, which is great. Typically hop on the trainer or treadmill. Can't complain

I'm a freelance software developer and have the most incredible work right now that allows me to work from home.  I've never been happier and it doesn't even feel like work since I enjoy it so much.  Sure I could make more money working a fulltime gig but having the opportunity to go S/B/R whenever I want is well worth any extra money I could make.  I can also work anywhere as long as I have my laptop with me so that allows me to travel to destination races and not worry about having enough vacation.  I am very lucky and do not take it forgranted.  I only hope it continues because I truly am the happiest I've ever been with work.

Pilot, but depending on the situation, that can also be the worst profession for triathlon. Mine is pretty ideal right now- I go for free time over extra $$, so I only work 2-3 days/week, and I'm home virtually every night. I was able to ramp up to 20 hrs/week for IMAZ without even sacrificing much family time. I feel very lucky :-)

Part time ER doc.

Good pay, flexible hours, no body misses you at work when you're gone, work when you're in town, work wherever you like...ER docs needed everywhere, demand so high that they'll take what you offer as far as hours (1 day / week for me now). the rest of the time I work in my coaching business and travel & train.

Sr Systems Admin for a software company.  HQ is in Santa Barbara CA.  I live in NJ and work from home.  Plenty of time for training.  I can take an extended lunch and go for a long run or swim.  I can get on the bike trainer in the afternoon and simply watch my laptop while on the bike to watch for incoming emails and any issues that pop up.

It's great.  I'm lucky.

I know a couple grad students who are making a good go of it.  Somehow disposable income and a carp-ton of time.

Speedknight.  How the hell do you train while at sea?

PS.  On a side note. . .as a former single guy in the military. . .I have to point out that the military is probably the only job that pays you extra and puts you in better living conditions if you get married.

Well since I started this! I work in Safety/HR. Great job, but in my current company I travel 2-3 days a week, that can make training tough.

I'm a CEO.

Hard work, long hours, but flexible.

Can train mornings and arrive late, or swim at lunch if no meetings, or leave early every so often.

I was going to say retiree but I think you've got the win right here.

(Also thought your screenname said "time to troll", which would have been epic)

I was going to say student because I can train whenever I want and simply study when I'm not training, but then I realized that I am poor as hell and can barely afford gear, let alone the good stuff!
