pistuo - 2013-02-22 11:48 PM I really want to do the B2B full... just to finish (bucket list).  But probably wont pull the trigger until closer to summer.  Am ramping up the training now to see if I can handle it.

You can do anything you set your mind to...perfect first Iron Distence is B2B just the best for first timers

Thanks for the encouragement Ken.  I've been getting some great base training in.  Our first baby is due in 1 week though!  My plan is to wait and see how that changes life and make sure I can commit to a decent training plan.  If I shoot for it, B2B will definitely be the race I go for.

First baby is pure magic bud...enjoy that time as much as possible because it really is special. Plus everything is better on no sleep. LolB2b is great but I agree that it is wise to see how the baby changes things. ... its hard to go for a 100 mile bike ride when you have been up most of the night with a sick baby!

Did the full ever sell out last year? Also, does anyone know when the hilton filled up last year and if there are any other hotels/motels within walking distance to the civic center?

The Hilton and the Best Western at the Convention Center (it is the not the civic center)

I think a good option will be the Courtyard by Marriott that they are buidling as we speak. Will be 3 blocks from the Hilton.

Any improvements this year? That would be cool if both transitions were at the convention center. Maybe swim down the cape fear river or at least a place where your friends and family can see you off and cheer at the start. Also, I hope they change the run and have it more in town. I hated the bermuda triangle loops through the neighborhood. Alot of people were complaining about the safety of the bike course on the B2B website. Oh, and a finishers shirt would be nice. Not that thin one with the huge neck that they gave out last year at packet pickup. I can't even wear it. Seems like a girls cut. Rant over.

Seriously doubt they have even thought about changing the swim. Swimming down the Cape Fear? That thing is nasty right around town and there are actually a good few gators that live right around the battleship area.

I have never thought the bike course was dangerous with regards to vehicle traffic. This past year I thought it got sketchy on the interstate due to bike congestion. There was only an hour between the start of the 2 races and in the past there was 90min between starts. That made for alot more back markers from the full still on the interstate when the front guys from the HIM came up the road. I also turned onto 421 and at the 1st water point there were people just stopped all over the road as opposed to getting water on the move. So yes, I thought baike safety was a little worse in 2012 as opposed to previous years. Like I said, I have never had a safety issue from cars on the bike course.

as for the run, there really is no great place to fit in 13mi downtown. The yearly Battleship HM even goes around Greenfield lake. I would not be opposed to them adding a few twists and turns and making it a 13mi loop around the lake instead of an out and back.

I actually like the shirt we got at packet pick up.

I love that shirt- you mean the grey long-sleeved one? I will buy yours from you assuming yours is an L. I'm not joking. It is my favorite shirt! Or I will trade you some other race shirt - haha PM me if you want money for a shirt you hate. :-)

As for the run course- I would love it if they just extended the bit around the lake to cut out the triangle. That thing sucked and confused people (a friend of mine was sent in the wrong direction and missed 3 miles of the run because of it). Overall though, no issues on the bike course wrt safety that is under the RDs control. Some of the other racers were just plain stupid on the bike course though- one guy passed on the right of the cones on the highway stretch! If a car hits you at that point, its not the RDs fault...just Darwin stepping in to lend a hand. :-) And I think the swim will stay- it is a drawing card for the race...I doubt the RD will modify something that is a winning proposition for them.

Yes still cheaper, and does Ironman event allow relays in their full ? @200 per participant, I think it is pretty well a bargain.

I will be racing the full this year too, my first full IM distance.  Been training hard for the Raleigh 70.3 so far, which will be my first official IM event and second half.  Will probably do the OBX half IM as a final tune-up in September.  This whole process has become a spiritual journey that is changing my life! Have had some ITB issues to work through, but everything seems to be calming down after I started working on changing my stride to what Pete Jacobs talked about in this article:

http://triathlon.competitor.com/2013/04/training/triathlon-running-advice-from-ironman-world-champion-pete-jacobs_73502

“You’ve got to stand tall, run proud with your chest up and feel as if something is pulling you up into the air,”

“The foot should land underneath you with the heel and forefoot landing at the same time.”

Taking less impact away from my heel feels much better, although my calves are much more sore with this adjustment!  If he can change and succeed, I believe I can too!  Good luck to everyone and enjoy the journey!

yo, congrats on taking the plunge. this is definitely a journey that, to us that do it, is satisfying and calming...until race week. You'll learn ALOT about yourself and what you can accomplish in the coming year...

Just wanted to point out that ITBS issues usually stem from bio-mechanical deficiencies, usually the muscles in the buttocks and hips. I'd suggest you incorporate a little strength training (if you aren't already doing it) to prevent ITBS from rearing its ugly head when you're reaching peak training volumes.

I also will be signing up for the B2B full this year.  I'm waiting until this summer just to make sure I don't get injured or anything while training for it.  This has been my first year competing in Triathlons and I've done 4 so far, including the White Lake HIM, so I'm hoping that I'm not being too overzealous by committing to the full but my other races have gone decent at least.  Is anyone planning on taking off from racing a couple of months prior to B2B, or do most people just train through and race normally leading up to an even this large?  I didn't break before the WLH, but thinking maybe my finish time would have been significantly better if I had.  Any inputs from veterans of a 140.6 would be great.

Thanks!  Yes, the change in stride is coming in the later stages of a years worth of strength training and physical therapy (injured ITB last April).  I have definitely learned a lot since last April and now at 39 I hope to continue moving forward in a way that I can sustain and remain injury free.  I want to be doing this for a long time!

I'm taking a couple weeks off during the peak of my training and want to go somewhere that would be good to train... Would Wilmington be a good place to go? Can you ride the bike course? Or is it high traffic?

Anyone have any other thoughts on a good place to go and train? I live in Texas, but would be willing to go just about anywhere... right now I'm considering Keystone, CO, a couple places in Florida, Galveston, TX or maybe even NC...

Well, about 245 slots left. We're 20 weeks out. I'm guessing that you'll start to see slots start to fill faster now b/c 20 weeks is a normal training period before an Iron distance.

Come on, Louis, qrkid, et all! Do a full this year!

A little over 200 slots left.

So, we booked our stay at the Sunspree. If you want to stay there, you're going to have to call b/c they have rooms reserved for B2B participants that are not available online. I tried to book online and there was no availability. I called and they said they had rooms set aside for the race. FYI, it's a GREAT place to stay. Kids eat free, right up the street from the bike drop off, and it's a great experience. They even drop you off at T1 in the morning via shuttle. Nothing but great things to say about that locale.

The only downside is that it's not close to the finish. After B2B half last year, wife picked me up at the finish.

PM sent since I don't think they are advertising the rates to the public.

Accountabilty time!

How's training coming along? Boy, slogging through some of these workouts in this heat has been tough. Glad that B2B is when it is. I know it still can be hot (or cold!), but rather have cooler weather.

Feeling pretty good overall, though. Really hope to continue to throw down good workouts and then throwdown at B2B!

If you have some questions, need some advice, or need some motivation, post here so we can help you out!

Less than 4 months away now, it will be here before we know it. Training is going well in the swim and bike, but the run is giving me trouble since I am battling a little bit of a nagging IT band issue and some discomfort in the fibular head. Been dealing with it since last April off and on, so nothing new. I have done everything under the sun to try to get back to normal without completely stopping for awhile, which is not an option, so I will drive on! Getting fitted for orthotics in August, so maybe that will help. No matter, I can still run and will fight, but just not up to the mileage/duration of running I need to be at yet.

This will be my first Iron distance after several short courses and two halfs so I am very excited. I am staying in the Best Western across from the convention center so I am sure I will see a few on you there at that hotel. Will probably sign up to do the OBX half in September as a fun workout a month out. Train well my friends!

I tried, and as of this morning, failed to sit this year out. Signed up for the full today! It'll be my third year at B2B, did the half last two years. I'm hoping there's still space at Holiday Inn Sunspree.

Definitely would rather stay at beach to avoid an extra morning shuttle.

Congrats on taking the plunge!

Don't try to book online...you'll have to call them directly. Agree about staying at the beach! My fam loves to stay there.

Really hope we have great weather this year. Last year, it wasn't bad (did the half). Wouldn't mind it being close to the same.

No kidding. Last year was perfect. We were swimming in the ocean sans wetsuit and loving it.

I actually rented a house last year, which was awesome location wise (and a nice place! ) but then had a bunch of ppl bail and it cost me! So sticking to a hotel.
