Subject: Running in the Rain

So tomorrow morning is my long run.  I've already missed one run this week and really don't want to miss another.

It's likely going to be raining and in the 40s.  Any recommendations or cautions for running in the rain?

I'm kinda pumped to do it.  (Kind of lame I know).

Hey, joestop! I am supposed to run tomorrow am too. Should be fun in the rain. No advice as I usually just tread the mill when weather is bad. Maybe I will htfu and get out in that rain tomorrow. Bundle up!

Well, we'll have to do our 'run reports' for tomorrow then.   Good luck out there!

You will either Love it or hate it, mid 40's is ok but mid 30's starts to suck and once you are wet , does it really matter any more, not much.

Personally I am not a fan of running in a steady rain, light drizzel ok, I will take a light to heavy snow over rain any day but that's not very likely in your area Wink.

Rainy and in the 40s - or what we call Oct to Jun here in the PNW. No real tips as in that weather should be fine to run. Don't bother trying to stay dry. Anything waterproof enough to keep you dry for an hr+ doesn't breathe and you'll wind up sweaty and hot.

You may consider something to prevent chafing if you are wearing a tech tee. You may find you like it. Running in a rain storm is one of my favorite times to run.

I don't mind running in the rain, but I'll run in any weather all the way down to temps below zero.

As someone already mentioned, be careful not to get wet or you could get really chilled. I also recommend a hat with a good bill, or something else that can help keep the rain out of your eyes. Even if the run itself isn't so bad, it's miserable to squint the whole time because the rain keeps hitting you in the face.

Have fun!

Running in the rain if it is warm or cold is my absolute favorite.  For 40s just make sure you have a decent shell and gloves.  Get after it.

No need for gloves. HTFU....

As mentioned, us PNW folks run in the rain 7+ months out of the year. A good wool cap or some sort of hat is important. Bodyglide the nips if you have it. Even the under armor tech shirts abuse the nipples. I actually prefer running in the rain as it keeps my body temp down for higher pace tempo runs.

Basically have fun, you'll be fine.

Oh and remember cars/bikes take longer to break and puddles might be a lot deeper than they look.

This is the situation in Oregon, as someone above has said, pretty much October or November thru June. Basically, don't try to keep dry. Goretex, etc. is a waste--you'll just sweat more and be wetter. I'd only use it if I also needed a windbreaker. Wear things that won't get heavy and uncomfortable when wet (no cotton or heavy jackets). Tech tees, tights (thermal if it's cold), pull-over tops, light jackets with polypro or similar are great. Sporthill and some other companies make running tights/leggings and long-sleeve tops made of something called 3SP which comes in different degrees of warmth and is great for running in cool/cold rain--it keeps you warm even when wet and doesn't get heavy. Lightweight Merino wool tops and socks work well. And don't forget to dry your shoes after--in rainy season in Oregon and here, I have at least 2 pairs that I alternate.

Thanks so much for the tips.  I think I'm good on the shirts (got a long sleeve, I think will work) ... no gloves (but like the htfu tip) ... and I have a skull cap.

This is new for me but I think I'm prepared.

Now the 40s for us Tucson-types is probably 20s for PNW'ers  LOL!

Depending on how hard the rain is coming down and how far you're going, you may want to wear a coat to stay dry.

Oh yea, try to hit all the big puddles!

It's great that you are pumped for it! That's probably one of the most important things. Along with the comments about the nips I would also suggest the fewer layers the better because eventually they will soak through and you'll be heavy and cold. Tech fabric (also suggested) helps reduce this issue as well. Finally a hat is a life saver. It helps keep rain out of your eyes. If you are running with traffic just use all the safety precautions you would use if it were dark. Assume people can't see you. grates manhole covers etc are extra slippery. Have fun!

For clothes, a good shell, and running tights if you have them.  The less absorbant clothing, the better.  A good hat with brim as others suggested.  I try never to destroy shoes before buying new ones, so I usually have a few back ups to wear on rainy days.

You can always try to time it for when its lightening up.  Can even look at doppler radar.  It can be fun running in POURING rain, but if it is just a steady, cold, soaking rain...it kind of gets old fast.

Have fun either way, its always nice to have some variety.

Went out for a 40 min run yesterday in the rain and didn't follow this very sound advice.  Guess I haven't been out in a heavy rain in a while as there was complete nipple pain etc (no need to be graphic)

no one else has mentioned the feet yet.  body glide the heck our of your feet to avoid blisters.

Try to enjoy yourself.  Some of my best runs have been in the rain.

Dress in light layers, wear a waterproof rain jacket, and HTFU. I've ran in a sleet/rain storm during an 18 mile long run and survived.

Well my adventure wasn't so adventurous.  It was only a drizzle the whole time.

It was pretty cold (for me) at 45 degrees but other than that no problem.

Still I was fairly wet by the time I was done with the 7 miles.  But thanks for the tips!   With the tips and it only being a drizzle, I'll be well prepared for the real downpour!

Run with a friend, misery loves company. Seriously, some of the most memorable runs have been running with a group in absolutely horrible weather. A few years ago five of us did a 20 miler that started out sleeting, turned into a thunderstorm, stopped for about half an hour, then we got dumped on again the last 5 miles. We're still talking about it.

I love a run in the rain, but not in 40 degree temps!

Depending on what gear you have....if you don't have much water proof gear, you could use a poncho.

In Seattle we complain about running in the sun.

Enjoy the run in the rain. It's not that bad
