Champion 6503 NOVA - Ironic for an Endurance Athlete | Subject: UGH!!! It looks like I am not even going to be in marathon shape in time for the Goofy in January. Finished my 12.5 mile slog today. While I wouldn't say that it was painful physically, it was tough mentally. My training had a two week break for some minor surgery and next week I go on a cruise. Question is, do I do the Goofy anyway, knowing that I may have to walk a lot and it may be really painful and slow? I really want the Goofy medal, but I don't want a two week recovery! |

How important to you is it to be "fast"? How important is the medal? Will it be meaningless if you are not "fast"? Fast is relatvie which is why I put it in "" Keep training next week and enjoy your vacation |

Member 390 | Subject: RE: UGH!!! were there is a will there is a way train on the cruise. You could always do laps around the ship. When on vacation I tend to run more. It makes me feel better about all the extra food I eat. You should at lest try. Better to have tried then never had started |

Extreme Veteran 481 | Subject: RE: UGH!!! The other posters have some good points. Would it be satisfying to walk/run the races? You probably know this, but there's a lot of fun on the course. You could take it easy, take pictures with the characters... If there is a race out there to relax and have fun, Disney is it. The 20th Anniversary Mickey medal looks pretty neat. Have fun on your cruise. I took a cruise on the Oasis of the Seas over the summer. It has a really nice track |

Royal(PITA) 14270 West Chester, Ohio | Subject: RE: UGH!!! Take todays weather into account for your UGH and slog fest. It was a lot warmer today than it has been in the past week or more. Makes a hard adaptation to go from 40 degrees to t5+ in one week. Goofy challenge is hard, if you really want to do it, it will take a lot of concerted effort even while on the cruise. However, they run that challenge every year. It will be there another year. |

THIS. We still have 2 months...so it can get better. Then, just think about these things listed above. Is just finishing good enough for you? Can you do it without causing significant injury? I did Goofy 3 years ago with what I thought was a stress fracture (with my doc's permission because I stayed in a boot after the races for 8 weeks...and I think it was prob more metatarsalgia anyway)....ran/walked it all with a 3 min run/2 min walk and got through it. I hurt like a mofo from soreness, but did no long-term damage. I wanted that medal. (last year, on the other hand, I was really injured to where my gait was all messed up and had to dnf at mile 8 of the marathon...that sort of sucked. But I'm coming back this year! Come on!! ) Editing to add that you can run on a cruise ship...it's just lots of laps. I've done 8 miles on one once. And there should be treadmills and spin bikes. New user 33 | Subject: RE: UGH!!! I am also signed up for the Goofy challenge and having training issues. I came off triathlon season at the end of August. Due to the biking and swimming demands, my base running miles had dropped a lot in the previous 2 months. I ramped up for the Twin Cities marathon and could tell that I didn't have enough training time to have any chance of a PR (this was only my second marathon and the goal for my first was to finish. I assumed that my second marathon would kill the first, but not undertrained like I was. So, I decided to Goofy train by doing the 10k and 5k the day before. Did good on the 5, PR on the 10, and struggled on the second half of the marathon. So, I started training a little harder and did a HM at the end of October. I killed my PR by 10 minutes. But, the next day, I had to cut my regular run short due to foot pain. Looks like I am developing plantar fasciitis. Now, I am struggling big time. Ended up under 12 miles today on my long run. So, I plan light training to give me time to heal, but will not have time to ramp up before my taper...GRRR!!!So, I never planned on anything close to PR's on this course. Need o leave with a lot left in the tank during the half, and will start the full sore and unrest end.Plan now is simple. Finish. Plan for personal worst on everything.5k Friday: untimed, so I will walk it. Will do light jogging if I spot the sag wagon.HM Saturday. Walk/jog. Bring my camera. Take pictures. Pose with the characters. Go real slow.FM Sunday, repeat Saturday plan. Get to the finish with a smile and lots of pictures and memories. The only point of this for me was to keep me motivated during the winter. Not working out that way. Will likely do the disneyland half and 5k so I can get the coast to coast medal. I have a personal plan to never repeat a marathon. Goofy is a unique milestone and one where I knew would to result in good times. I am fine with that. I don't intend to return, so I will get it done! |

On the cruise, run laps of the ship's deck (they will also have a gym/treadmills). On the island stopovers, see the sights on a 5-10 run. Marathon training takes less than 90min/day.
How bad do you want the medal? |

Champion 6503 NOVA - Ironic for an Endurance Athlete | Subject: RE: UGH!!! I ran on the boat. Up to 7 miles. 2.5 laps / mile. Ran on island 5k. I am NOT suited for heat! I have 3 twelve mile runs under my belt. Running 30 miles / week. I am used to running 30 miles in two days in prep for a marathon. This weekend I will do a 16. I will probably walk at least 6 miles of the marathon and 6 miles of the half (with my wife & two daughters). None of this matters after I saw this video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8I6Sr4TPoKo Yes, I am THAT shallow! |
