While sitting at the house talking to the wife about some tris to do in 2013, she starts googling races.  She finds this one and shows it to me, as our daughter is looking/listening.

The wife starts reading off the "schwag" list.  My daughter perks up at the thought of getting a Santa hat just for running then asks, "Wait.  Someone who runs that race will get a Santa hat, a tee shirt, and a medal?"  "Yes.  Most races give you a tee shirt and finisher's medal.  This one gives you a Santa hat because it's got a holiday theme to it," I tell her.  "OH COOL!!  Can we do it, Dad?  I want a medal!!"  "Well, do you know how far 5K is?"  "No.  How far?"  "3.1 miles."  "Can you do it, Dad?"  "Yes."  "Then let's do it!"

We're signing up on Thursday (pay day) unless she backs out between now and then.  We just have to get her trained up in 25 days.

I can't wait to see how she does, and I can't wait until her first triathlon!!!

Some of the greatest days of my life have been racing with my kids.  You are most fortunate.  Enjoy it.

Congrats man!

Nothing finer than that kind of time with the family.

Count yourself among the lucky (even if she doesn't do this one - and I hope she does - you can definitely work with that kind of enthusiasm!).

I just remembered something else from that conversation.  I asked her if she'd start running the finishing chute with me in my triathlons.  She first asked what a finishing chute was, and then, after I explained it to her, she exclaimed, "HECK YEAH!"

My heart swells sometimes!

I just did a father/daughter 5K... my Dad is 72!  His first 5K.

We did an obstacle race - the worst obstacle was the COLD water and mud.

I love running with my 10yo daughter.  She is fine up to mile 2.  Then she hates every step of it; however, she keeps going.  I keep thinking that is it.  But, she keeps wanting to run with me and mom.  Fun times!

kingofbanff... She's 10.

I have 3 kids; 2 boys, 16 and 15, and my daughter.  The eldest hates running but loves cycling.  The daughter wants to do triathlons.  My younger son... yeah, he doesn't want anything to do with anything that doesn't have a TV and a controller attached to it.  :-/

Awesome. Please share pictures. This Saturday I get to run with my daughter in her first 5k. I'm not just her Dad, i'm her Girls on the Run coach, along with 22 other girls. I can't wait to give her the finisher's medal. I've gotten to see her and my son run the kids fun runs at some of our races, and the Mickey Mile at Disneyworld. Enjoy these years.

According to my wife, the course is a decent enough circuit that she'll be able to get some in action shots of us.
The finish chute is actually indoors, at the Virginia Beach Convention Center... hopefully the wife will be there to catch us as we finish.

Coaching 22 girls?!?  WOW!  My hat is off to you!

That's awesome enjoy, one of the best days training I ever had was with My 9 year old Grandaughter, we were visiting and I was going out for my sunday morning run and she asked if she could join me, she had done a few KOS tris so I said sure. I kept the pace down and did run walk and she hung in there thru the 8K I normally run , It Was the farthest that she had ever gone, but we both had an great morning and something we will both remember for a long time.

I am waiting for the day when we can do a tri together.

I most look forward to this.  Frankly, the only thing preventing it is her ability.  Soon enough, she and I will be doing a sprint together.

Both of my girls (5 and 8) ran their first 5k "with" me a couple weeks ago.  I stayed with my 5 year-old, whom I had to carry up a hill near the finish, but she managed to sprint ahead of me at the end to beat dad.  I got a great finish line photo of her with the biggest grin on her face.

The 8 year-old, chose to with a group of her friends.  She smoked all of them by more than 10 minutes, and remained standing at the finish line waiting on her sister to finish.

Oh, I should add, shopping for a "cute" running outfit for both of them was a blast.

Have fun at your event.  I've run Surf-n-Santa a few times.  J&A usually puts on a great race.

This is awesome.!  My kids are 8 and 8.5 (Adopted)..  I'm pretty sure they could beat me in a 5k right now.  I can't wait to run with them in an official race.  Have fun!!

You running it this year?

I plan to run the whole thing with my daughter, and I do also plan to let her "beat me."  lol
The wife has already bought the daughter her running outfit.  We'll be good to go!

I was surprised when my 12 year old son told me he wanted to run on the cross country team. He'd just played baseball before.  We went to run together for the first time yesterday. I hope to do some races with him in the future if he ends up liking it.

My 10-year old daughter and I did a father-daughter tri this summer. It was great fun. It was a run-bike-canoe, with 2-person canoes for the last leg, so pairs have to stay together. It's at Tuckahoe State Park on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, on the day before Eagleman 70.3, so if any of you are in the area for Eagleman, it could be a nice way to involve the family. We stayed in a camper cabin at the park the night before the race, making it even more fun. Smores for pre-race dining.

We did fine on the 2-mile run along the park's winding fitness trail, and we had fun on the 10-mile bike. We were a disaster on the 1-mile canoe leg, struggling to even head in the right direction.

My youngest daughter and I run a 10K every year.  The first year we did it, she was 7, and when we got to the first mile marker she said "Gee Dad, miles are short!"

Someday soon she will completely kick my a** in a race.

Run/Bike/Canoe sounds awesome... except I'd never keep my daughter focused on paddling the canoe!  lol

As for eventually getting my arse kicked by the daughter... I welcome the day, because it means my job here is pretty much done.  :-)

I'm doing my first 5k on Turkey Day with my 9 year old daughter. My 12 year old girl is running it with her friends, and will smoke us without much effort. I'm thinking it will be a 'run 4 telephone poles, walk 1" pace for us, but I can't wait for her to cross the finish line!

Ran a 5K Trukey Trot four years ago with (then 10) eldest daughter.  It was great.  She hasn't wanted to run with me recently, though!

It's a great feeling running the chute with your daughter!  My 11 year old daughter has run some sprint finishes with me and she also ran the finish to my HIM.  Definitely a great moment we shared together!  Enjoy it.

You running it this year?

Unfortunately not this year.  Invested too much money in destination events this year (as well as a new bike).  Wife asked/told me no more events this year.... well after this weekends final event, which was already paid for.

I've done a couple tri's with my son 17. Two weekends ago we ran a half marathon together (well he finished ahead of me:-)). And we are planning to do a HIM next June. Lots of fun with my oldest. In two weeks the whole family is doing a Santa run 5km me the wife 17, 12, and 9. Mom will hang with the youngest and we are running it. You get a Santa suit woohoo.

Precious times together. :-)
