Subject: Indoor Bike Training Equipment

I will not be able to ride outside all winter.  I am in the New England area. I have been athletic all my life, but this is the beginning of my triathlete career.

What is the best equipment to use for indoor bike training?  Should I be investing in an exercise bike or one of the resistance trainers that you attached 'your' bike to?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The low cost option is the trainer stand for your bike and some Sufferfest videos.

This is the high cost option for your bike  tacx

does anyone have this ''tacx'' system? it looks interesting but does it really work as good as they say?

for now i have a normal bike trainer and some sufferfest dvd's and that works good as well probably alot cheaper then the tacx as i could not even find the price.

Buy (i) a fluid trainer, (ii) strong fans, (iii) something to occupy you (music, videos, etc.). Ride it a lot. It will seem surprisingly difficult/boring at first, but you really do get used to it. When the spring comes around, you'll be a stronger rider.

Some of the best riders hardly ever ride outside in training.

bike trainer - cycleops or kurt kinetic fluid trainer

Speed/Cadence Sensor - Garmin GSC 10

Ant+ Stick for your computer - Suunto Movestick Mini

fan - any normal fan from Walmart etc will work fine

tv - 60" or bigger.  It can't hurt to dream!

trainerroad.com.  Trainer road is only $10 month and will give you most of the benefits of computrainer of tacx.

How hard are rollers on your tires? I have always heard that traditional trainer will ware down your tire with a lot of use.

they say it will burn up your normal tire, i personally don't know because with the bike trainer i bought a ''special'' tire came with it so i put that on right away.

I don't know about rollers, but for trainers it depends on the trainer and the tire. I run Gatorskins (v. hard) on a KK trainer (relatively low heat), and have no problems.

If you can, it is a great idea to have a totally separate rear wheel that you can swap out whenever you use the trainer. It may not be that big of a deal in places where you cannot ride outside during the winter months though.

I definitely echo the indoor trainer.  I also recommend a fluid trainer- much less noisy.  DEFINITELY get a trainer tire or a different rear wheel.  If you want the benefit of a computrainer or the like, see if there is a cycling gym in your area or a bike shop with computrainers.  This winter I am riding indoors 4x per week. Twice a week I am at home on my KK trainer with a fan in front of the tv.  The other 2 rides are at a local cycling studio.  They have 8 computrainers and we ride as a group- different routes and workouts each week.  It cost me $200 for 16 sessions- definitely worth it to get the power training and not be so bored.

Works really well. If i were a roadie i would get it if i had the money. Triathletes usually prefer computrainer though. trainer is similar, graphics are not as good but It has a ton of ironman courses.

I have a performance fluid trainer i put over 10,000 miles on. I watch movies on my long rides, just watch tv on my shorter rides doing the winter program.

The $75 I spent on a trainer 10 years ago are the most valuable dollars I have ever invested in this sport. Hands down, no question.
