Subject: my dog is running into my screen door, help

We just had a retractable screen door installed, the kind that coil up and are held by a magnet.  Anyway, my dog ran through it the other day and the frame came of the rails and had to have the guy come back and fix it.  I was wondering if anybody has the same situation.  I was thinking of placing a piece of duck tape on the screen so they can see it but it looks ugly.  Was also just thinking about putting something in front of the door low to the ground to deter them from running though the door.  Needs to be something removable and easy to step over for us to walk in and out of the door.

Any suggestions..

I'd wait and see if the dog figures it out.  Dogs are typically smart.  You could probably use some electrical tape to make a not-as ugly design on the bottom part of the screen.

That being said, mine still sorta would do this if I was opening the glass door to let them out and the screen door was closed behind it.  I finally took to just leaving the screen door open unless it was the only door....simply to avoid the dogs running into it.  As long as they saw me close the screen door they were fine.  They just didn't see the screen behind the glass.

And for the screened in porch door I finally had to get a solid-bottom door...they made their own doggie door out of the screen-bottom door.  *sigh*

Makes me wonder if you couldn't spray some cologne or lysol on the screen.  Dogs have a very powerful sniffer, so maybe their sense of smell would let them know there's something there.

Aside from that, I don't know.

Whatever you do, don't put a cat-shaped sticker on the screen...

Try this! Sounds like a fun experiment The scent spray, not the cat-shaped sticker part...

Or vinegar/water? Maybe if he steps near the screen give a spray then offer reward for backing away?

I also saw this scat mat on petsmart: http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2752972&f=P... is not working, but basically it sends a little shock like static electricity to the dog if they step on the mat. You could put the mat in front of the door.

We have a half-screen door. I have golden retrievers, who can still jump up and get their big feet on the screen part, and so I have to still keep either replacing the mesh or putting the glass up part way to block the screen so they don't tear it up. Since I started doing that, I have not had a problem in terms of the screen getting torn; just muddy pawprints on the screen and door. If I had a full screen door, I would not have a screen door.

Do you know anyone with young kids that have outgrown the stairway gates?  We used that in the doorway until our dog figured it out.  Love that phantom screen!

We use two of these to keep the dogs from going into two rooms so the cats can get some peace. We have to keep them a couple of inches off the ground so the cats don't have to always jump over, especially at the top of the stairs. Which worked great until Biscuit learned to belly-crawl under like some kind of canine commando....

Lots of patience and training....it took a LONG time but we trained our dog to go to a certain spot when the doorbell rang, and to stop at a certain point in the hallway - she only goes OUT the door on command...
