Pre-race routine:

Drove two hours to the race site. Drank gatorade and had some banana pancakes.
Event warmup:

Walked around the farm, asked questions about the race. Found out there were six major climbs, and one stream crossing that would be up to our knees.
Run
  • 3h 05m
  • 14.2 miles
  • 13m 02s  min/mile
Comments:

The first 4 miles were probably the toughest both technically and incline/decline. The first 3 miles were flat and allowed us to get our legs warmed up. Tons of mud and rocks.

We hit this huge technical downhill, with tons of switchbacks and man made bridges. These bridges would be huge 20 to 30 foot logs with the side carved off and pieces of wood nailed to them....did I mention I have vertigo. There is no way I could ride my bike over those.

After the long downhill it was time for hill #1. Thankfully it was on a fire road and not singletrack.

We popped out on to a road and someone asked if we were short or long course. It was tempting to say short but instead we headed back out into the woods for climb #2.

We went down again and were in a valley and crossed this same stream about 10 times. It was flat, cool and very pretty for this part of the run.

We climbed again and got offered a Red bull....I can't remember all the details after this. The trail ended up along side a golf course and at some point we came to a road and then we had to enter the golf course and go up this long hill IN THE SUN. This was a tough hill and it wasn't even one of the six. It was brutal being out in the sun climbing this hill.

We crossed a stream that was about knee high....and at this point we only had about 4 miles to go. This is where I ran out of water in my camelback. I have never ran out of water in all the years that I have used that thing!

The last few miles had a huge climb through the woods, technical and lots of rocks. At the end of the long climb I saw Evil and she said there was only about a mile left, we came out of the woods and there was the farm!!! Woohooo we were done.

I was starting to get tired, but I felt good and if I had water with me I felt like I could have gone for about another 30 minutes. I walked the six climbs and ran most everything else.
What would you do differently?:

Carry more water.
Post race
Warm down:

Took off my shoes and socks and laid in the grass.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Not being able to run up the hills.

Event comments:

They advertised food for 5 and since we were done at 4, I was starving at 5:30. We left and went to Sheetz for dinner.

Nice race.  I wish they would have more trail runs around here.  For that matter, I wish they would just have more trails around here.

Great race and race report.  I'm glad nobody stole your pancakes this time.  That sounds like one tough run especially with wet shoes and socks.  Did you have to get a reservation for Sheetz.

Congratulations

That sounds SO fun! Sounds like you really have to plan for nutrition/hydration for this kind of event too..Must have been tough in the sun- altho the rain we were having here would NOT have been a good trade off! Congrats!

Great race.  Congrats.  Trail running sounds like fun.  I will have to try that someday.
