My son (8) has been wanting to do one.  I assume it's for fun too.  His bike is good enough,.  Maybe see you here...

My daughter did the Miracles for Mitch Tri (for kids) and I HIGHLY recommend it.  It's well run and they have two distances based on age (7-10 and 11 to 17).  It's very well run and great for kids.  They run it twice in the summer - one at Lake Nakomis and one at Lake Ann in Chanhassen.  The kids raise money as part of the Tri (it benefits kids with cancer), which is a great way to teach kids about helping others.  The thing that I liked the most is that there is no obligation to raise a set amount of money - you and your child pick the goal.

We haven't done the LTF kids yet, but my daughter wants to do more so I'm planning to sign her up for the LTF Tri as well.

In terms of equipment, kids will show up with anything and everything.  As long as it doesn't have training wheels, they'll be good to go.  I can only speak to the Mircles Tri and while it's "competitive" (the kids go as hard as they can), it's not timed and it's all about them finishing, rather than competiing with each other.

My 9yo girl did the LTF kids tri this past summer. She LOVED it. Well run event, lots of support from staff and great crowds supportive of everyone. Every group, as they came out of the pool, got a big ovation from the crowd. One in particular, a 9 yo that struggled on the swim, got a HUGE cheer from the crowd when she got to the wall and got out. It was actually quite touching...

Anyway, it was a very well run event, nice medal and drinks/sandwiches and cookies for the kids at the finish. There was also bounce houses, face painting, music, and other vendors in the finish area (not terribly different from LTF Tri for grown-ups the day before), and we will certainly be doing it again next year. My 6yo (turns 7 this summer) wants to do it, but we have to get her off the training wheels first!
