I'm starting to think about next summer and am contemplating trying an OLY. Any suggestions for good ones to try? I live in Longmont, so anything close would be nice. I'm not thinking I want to do the peak however :-)

Here are few off the top:

Boulder Sunrise - June

Boulder Sunset - usually September

Loveland Lake 2 Lake - July

Rattlesnake Tri - August

The Boulder races have the same swim and run course as Peak, but they follow a different bike route and don't go up Old Stage.

I did Boulder Sunset and Loveland Lake 2 Lake last year; both good races.

The bike on Lake 2 Lake is a little over Olympic distance and does have some climbing.  Unfortunately due to the fire last year we had to do a modified bike route, looking forward to doing the real thing this year. This is a well run race, with an early morning start.

Boulder Sunset was also a good race, and I thought it was well run too.

Boulder Sunset was a very good race- well run, not a terribly hilly course.  I could have done without the gale force winds and driving rain on the bike, but I guess that's what we get for living in Colorado.  It was sunny and 70 for the swim, and sunny and 70 for the run .

I volunteered at the Desert Edge triathlon a couple of months ago in Fruita.  It sold out before I got around to registering.  It was a beautiful course and we camped right in the park.  They got hit with record cold on race morning which was unfortunate, but it was almost 70 degrees by the finish.  80's a couple of days before and after the race.  Not bad, considering it was snowing in Denver.  It's on my calendar for next year.  I just need to get off my butt and register early before it sells out.

I gonna agree with a few others here, I did the Boulder Sunrise and Sunset sprints last year and loved them. I jumped on the early bird special and registered for the Olympic distance for this coming season.

I raced this race and it's great, but I would not want to do it again if it's going to be so cold. When my car was reading 31 degrees 15 minutes before the start... getting in the water was the last thing I wanted to do. For the first year of an event it was wonderful! I'd highly recommend it for a late season race (early October), just be prepared for a COLD swim.

And of Lake 2 Lake and the Rattlesnake, I'd recommend the L2L. The course is beautiful and the run isn't as hot. Both races are well managed.

Thanks! It just seems like the only options are early or late in the season. I'd live to do a sprint first then a mid summer OLY.

Yeah - it was an unusually chilly morning. The local paper said it was record cold, so I wouldn't expect to see temps like that again. I spent the whole week there setting up the course, and it was mid to upper 80's every day, and again the day after. We just got unlucky with the cold front on race weekend. We're also moving the start time an hour later!

Not as close as the others, but the Denver Triathlon was pretty fun. Bike and run are mostly flat. The only exception is the 8th Ave viaduct. But that incline isn't very long.

HITS is coming to Highline State Park (GJ) this year.  They offer all distances from sprint to IM.  Race date is May 18 (same as the Summer Open sprint race in Longmont).

All great suggestions, especially the Desert's Edge last year is a good late season Olympic.  For mid-late Summer check our Aug 18th Steamboat Olympic.  Low altitude, gorgeous venue at Lake Catamount and a perfect weekend to escape to the mountains before the weather sets in.
