Overall Rank = 12/147
Age Group = 50-54
Age Group Rank = 2/5
Pre-race routine:

Spent the weekend at my high school reunion out of town, we were at a dance until after midnight last night, so by the time we drove home and got to bed it was after 2 am, up at 4:30.

Clif bar, coffee, quick shower, load the stuff in the car and drove the 10 miles or so to the race site.

Saw and said hello to BTers Brandy, John, Chris (rugby kid) and Michael Pate (Michael).
Event warmup:

After checking in and setting up transition, rode about ten minutes and then ran about that long as well. Couple visits to the restroom, and they were lining up for the swim.
Swim
  • 03m 19s
  • 150 yards
  • 02m 13s / 100 yards
Comments:

Not so great. No one passed me, and I passed four or five people, but what really sucked were the turns. Nailed a couple of them, but got tangled into the steps in the first lane, and in a subsequent lane actually turned way too soon, before touching the wall. Had to backtrack to touch it.
What would you do differently?:

Practice turns, practice swimming in a 25-yd pool so I know when to turn.
Transition 1
  • 01m 21s
Comments:

Fairly short (150') run from pool to the transition area, got helmet and glasses on easy, less than 20' to mounting line. T1 time does not include getting into shoes, which really sucked. Hit lap button as soon as I was mounted.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, went smooth.
Bike
  • 36m 43s
  • 14 miles
  • 22.88 mile/hr
Comments:

Struggled getting into right shoe, but didn't get passed. Once shoe was on, got up to speed and immediately started passing others. Initial route out must have had a slight tailwind, had no trouble holding 24-25mph. Didn't get a whole lot harder after turnaround. Rider just ahead of me missed a clearly marked turn, ended up with a 27mph+ bike split until they DQed him.

Hardest stretch was the service road, maybe a mile of crappy surface against the breeze, found it hard to hold 20 here, without this stretch and the fumbling with the shoe I would have easily averaged 23mph.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. This was a pretty good bike split, only one other person over 40 beat my time.
Transition 2
  • 00m 42s
Comments:

Just like they draw it up, great rolling dismount, racked the bike, stowed the helmet, slipped on the shoes and grabbed the race belt. Out of there!
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. Nailed this one.
Run
  • 15m 22s
  • 2 miles
  • 07m 41s  min/mile
Comments:

It's gotten quite warm by now, 86 degrees by 8:30, and you can certainly feel it more on the run. Went out too fast as usual, took a while to find comfortable pace, finally got to where I could just abate the impending sidestitch and held it there. Felt a little slow, but doubt I could have pushed any harder in this heat.
What would you do differently?:

Wait until November to do the run, but then my times would have really sucked.
Post race
Warm down:

Put mouth under Gatorade spigot and let it pour. ;) Walked around and cheered while everyone finished.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Swim, especially clumsy turns.Still, no one passed me the whole race, not even on the run where I usually give back ground.

Event comments:

Well-run small event for a good cause (local boy scout troops). Event went off on time, plenty of volunteers, route was well marked on bike and run. Probably could have used volunteers at the major turn that at least two riders missed, also could use better pavement on the service road. Otherwise a great little event, good jambalaya and plenty to drink at he finiash.

Won a doorprize (gear bag from Stage) which Angel immediately claimed. Plenty of yams to go around, as they couldn't give them away!

Great job John!!! The twins and I had fun. It was good to see the BT Group and many other friends, too. I was proud of all of them.

You look like you had a great race! Glad I wasn't the only one who almost ran into the steps. I personally think they should have started us at that end.

Do you usually have sidestiches? I don't and neither does John and we both had one during the run. I thought it was weird.

Great job today - and the BT tri suit looks great!

Edit- I just noticed you placed 2nd - did you get one of the medals? Did it have a yam on it?

GREAT JOB!!!  Very impressive race despite the heat!  You are an animal on that bike!  Wish we had been there...we could have duplicated the BT aid station at BSLT (bikinis in a kiddie pool! Derek would have looked so hot!)  Those coonasses in Opelousas wouldn't have known what to do with us!

Nice work on the 2nd in AG and 12th overall!

Now, if you spent any time in the pool maybe you could have knocked a whole 30 seconds off that time ......

Nice work on the bike + run ... cannot imagine what you would have done if you had more than two hours of sleep and weren't still drunk from the night before

Seriously, congrats on the hardware.

Well done.

Haven't had an alcoholic beverage in ten years, but the sleep deprivation didn't help!

Doesn't sound like much, but, as much as I hate to admit it, 30 seconds faster on the swim moves me up 3 places overall and into first in my AG. We'll get there eventually, I'm happy with this as my first tri of the season.

I love yams!

Diane

They had boxes of 'em, couldn't give 'em away. Opelousas is like the Yam Capitol of the world, has an annual Yam Festival, etc.

Is this your first tri of the year? Grats on the strong showing..... it is amazing what being able to run marathons will do for your run/swim.

I think I am going to try to finish a marathon this year and get it out of the way.

Grats on second place!

Great job!

Another yam fan here by the way. Next time you can pack a bunch and then just swing 'em by Houston on your next long ride.
