I'm not sure how far you are willing to go.  There are some good steady climbs in Palos Verdes on the back side near Trump National Golf Course.

Ahhh, I heard there was good climbing in PV. Something about "switchbacks"...are you talking about the same climb? Can I get some street names? Thanks for the reply.

PV drive south are the switchbacks, at the light at the top turn left onto Crest for another 2 miles or so.  Another decent climb is PV drive East (the PV drives North, South East and West roughly form a ring around PV).  Bue neither of these, nor any other in PV, is all that long (the switchbacks are only 2 miles long).  To  get sustained climbing in, you have to string together lots of climbs, although you can do that and end of with a lot of elevation.

Other good climbs are Hawthorne from PV west, and Via Coronel also from PV west.

Most people in OC talk about Santiago Canyon, though I've never done it.

World class climbing in the Santa Monicas, Mulholland, Encinal, Yerba Buena, Latigo.  That's when you start getting into 9 mile climbs.

Yes, what Chris said is the area of PV I was thinking about.

There is also a good 3200 foot climb at Griffith Park if you will go that far, I am going to be riding there next Sunday and regularly going forward in preparation for HIM Oceanside.

Thanks guys.

Scott: I remember Macca saying when he's at his LA residence he likes to do the Griffith Park climb to get stronger. Definitely a must-do. Thanks.

Chris: You should do the OC Tri. The bike course is Santiago Canyon. Fun race.

Bike or run?  If you're biking, either head into the hills around Brea Canyon, or--if you want a butt-kicking--go a little north on the 57 and do the Glendora Mountain Road ride.

As for running, probably the same applies--the eastern San Gabriel mountains are your friends. Cool

Pretty much what the other's have said.  If I'm staying local I stick to Santiago Canyon otherwise I head up to GMR.  If you're feeling frisky you can keep going up GMR to Baldy/Lifts.
