Twin Lakes Triathlon (Palatine) - TriathlonShort Course

View Member's Race Log
Palatine, Illinois
United States
65F / 18C
Precipitation
Total Time = 1h 51m
Overall Rank = 58/120
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 15/25
Pre-race routine:

Got up at the crack of dawn to meet Katie and Pete at Pete's house. Then drove to Palatine. Met my friend Kathy and talked to her and saw where she racked her bike, etc etc... The obligatory trip to the porta potty... then on went the rubber cap and off to the swim start!

Ran into Mr. hangloose at the beginning of the race... He was psyched and ready to go!
Event warmup:

Not much of a warm up.
Swim
  • 11m 52s
  • 875 yards
  • 01m 22s / 100 yards
Comments:

A "busy" swim as one of my rack mates said as we were getting out of T1.. .and I have to agree... There was alot going on... alot of people thrashing in the water, and just alot of hectic activity. Nearly as bad as the Chicago swim starts... but not quite!
What would you do differently?:

Not much. I've had a couple of really decent OW swims the past 2 days. Am happy.
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

Nearly ran out of T1 with my swim cap under my helmet. Not thinking clearly. Rainy... my socks were wet before I even got started on the bike.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe no socks... Don't know how my feet would react to that, and race day is not the time to find out... but the socks just felt gross and didn't seem to do much good.
Bike
  • 47m 8s
  • 14.5 miles
  • 18.46 mile/hr
Comments:

I got myself all worried about this course...and it was a bit technical, however, it wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it might be.
What would you do differently?:

Been a teeny tiny bit more aggressive. I played it very safe due to wet road conditions.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

Had a bit of trouble racking my bike... DUH. Also had a bit of trouble tying my shoes.
What would you do differently?:

The socks again... should have left the socks off entirely.
Run
  • 52m 53s
  • 4.9 miles
  • 10m 47s  min/mile
Comments:

The running misery continues, however I'm getting a bit faster. I really am. The run times include T2, so I actually was a bit faster than the times indicate. Last year at this time I was slogging along at about 12:45 minute miles... So I'm making progress.... Slogging a bit faster these days.
What would you do differently?:

Not much. Have been working my run and it seems to be coming along slowly.
Post race
Warm down:

Finished... saw hangloose and some others at the finish line... ate an entire orange (4 quarters!) and a banana... wandered around looking for K & P. Waited for my friend Kathy to finish...

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Would have been more aggressive on the bike had it not been for the rain. Really didn't want to fall today. The run is getting better, slowly. Must continue to work my run.

Event comments:

As always a great way to spend a Sunday AM. Too bad it rained, we all could have been a bit more carefree and agressive on the bike had the pavement not been so wet.

You rock Whizzzz!!!

Congrats on an awesome race..especially the faster run part. Your hard work is bringing down your run time as you are faster!!

Wicked fast in the swim and bike...and best of all sounds like you had a great time!

Great job Whizzzz!
I was there this morning but I'm not sure what you all look like and I left my cell at home. I think hangloose tried to call me. NUTS! It was my first tri in the rain. Not a huge fan of that. I throw my report up soon!

Yep.  You rock.  Congrats on a SAFE race in the rain and it was great to meet you.  I forgot to get a picture with you!  Oh well, maybe next time.

Eric - I did try calling you.  Sorry I missed you.  Glad you had a good race too.  I'm working on my RR as we speak.

Nice work staying vertical on the bike...on wet roads. I know the feeling as we had the same a Bigfoot.

And Great job in slogging faster

Great race, good improvement on the run. Fast bike too, despite your caution. I'm going to make you the "Ride Lots!" poster child if you get any faster.

A running improvement of 2 minutes/mile?  Awesome!  Must be all that POSITIVE thinking about how much FUN it is to RUN!!!  Great job in tough weather/conditions.

Awesome race Laura!

You kicked some on that swim.  All that BAM is finally paying off.  As is the LOVE of running.  Heh.

Sorry it rained on y'all ( sorry, left over texas influence ), but it's better to ride a bit slower and not crash than push it and end up DNF'ing due to a wreck.

Great race!

Slogging on the run?  Sounds pretty decent to me though, plus you are a lightning fast swimmer.  Holy cow, I'd be going like mad on the bike to catch you with that kind of a lead.  Nice race Whizzzzzzzz!!!
