Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() If by "outside" you mean "inside on a treadmill" then yes. |

Know your routes and have alternate options in mind if you encounter icy/slippery conditions, or sidewalks that haven't been shoveled, etc. Make sure you are wearing bright colors and reflective gear (even during the day), and wear layers. If you're layered it means you can easily adjust if you're too warm. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() @xatefrog: That's exactly what I was afraid of... @givemeashot: I think I have the right gear. I'll just wear my cold weather gear and go from there. Although I have no idea which shoes to wear. I've never run on the snow. It makes me just want to run indoors on the dreadmill coz I think I wont get my training run goals outside. |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() My favorite time of year to run in Utah is the winter. You don't have to dress as warm as you would think because of the heat you generate when you run. I usually just wear shorts and a t-shirt under a warm up suit. As far as running in snow, I have a pair of Yaktrax that I love. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() If you are going to be here in Utah for a long time with many winters then you should get the stuff you need to run in the snow. If you're only going to be here temporarily then I wouldn't bother and just do your runs on the treadmill and take advantage of the nice days outside. It's not really as bad as you think though. Most towns are really good about maintaining roads and sidewalks during the winter. Take luck. |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I did my 20 mile training run on a day that started out cloudy and snowing after 6inches had already fallen. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I thought that it was better to run in the afternoon when there's an inversion. Hmmmm. I'll have to chat with someone at the state Dept of Air Quality about that. Know anyone there, Heather? |

Always eating their burrito's and contributing to the poor air quality!!! ![]() |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I run outside (Cache Valley) in the winter, although last winter (my first in Utah) was relatively mild according to the locals. If it has snowed or frozen, take it easy with footing (I generally run in the road on side streets). Dress in layers and expect to be cold for the first 10-15 minutes. (If you are comfortable in the first 5 minutes, you're probably overdressed). |

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() My wife and I did most of our base miles during 5:00 AM runs in Heber. A good (lightweight) headlamp, lycra, fleece, and polyester base layers, long sleeve running hoodies with the little thumb hole things in the sleeves, wool socks, and a focus on dressing for the second mile got us through with minimal problems, even on the coldest of days.
I'm actually really bummed that next month's back surgery means I'm going to miss out on it this year.

Member ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I will run below zero if that is the temp. Some of my favorite runs have been in the snow while training for Spring marathons. The air quality is a bigger issue than cold/snow/ice. I live here in Davis County. My rule for how to dress is to dress 20 degrees warmer than it is outside. Also, I second the Smartwool running socks, and I keep my head covered and hands warm, and I am pretty much good to go. I love it in the winter! |
