Subject: Your Gym Membership

So, I (we) broke down and got a gym membership (my wife and I). Once we moved, I lost out on space for my home gym, picked up triathlon, and now need a pool to swim in (500 yds about killed me this summer). So, I want to train through the winter and pick it back up once I recover from my ACL injury.

Our gym membership together will run us about $120 a month. Very nice facilities, lots of machines, treadmills, free weights, and of course...the pool.

I live in a town of about 25,000 - there are two other gyms that I can think of off the top of my head, however - they do not include a pool.

I was just wondering what everyone paid for their gym memberships - to see if this is a reasonable price or not. Granted, I have to pay it - but it just seems kind of high.

that seems ridiculously high.  i am a member of a gym, where i lift weights, that runs me ~$30 a month, but i think since they have done a lot of facility upgrades recently new members pay ~$35-$40. This gym doesn't have a pool, so i am also a member of an aquatics facility where i pay ~$40 a month to be a member.  it has a 50 meter lap pool and 25 meter therapy meter pool, the center also has treadmills, ellipticals, and some light weights.

there would have to be some insane perks for me to cough up $120 a month for a gym membership.  however, it all comes down to what works best for you and your goals.

edit: if you aren't getting a family deal and have to go by individual rates, for two people that is cheaper than what i pay... so yeah.

I pay $15/month for a full gym membership and Olympic size pool, plus ability to rent raquetball, tennis courts, basketball, squash, etc.  This is through my local university.

I belong to a gym with lots of machines, weights, 1/2 basketball court, rock climbing wall (not that I've ever seen anyone use it), 25m pool, class studio and a spin studio.  It's open 24/7/365 and also has a spa/salon inside - and I pay $35/month for it.

My husband goes to a much more upscale gym, no basketball court, rock climbing wall, isn't open every day of the year, but does have things like swimming lessons included in the membership - he pays $100/month

To put those in perspective - the gym that we both belonged to in London cost us approximately $160/month.

For a Gym with a pool that sounds  reasonable for 2 people especially if the equipment and facilities are good. I lucked out and get to use the Student rec center at the  university that  I work at. The  facilities are awesome nice 50M pool lots of machines and multiple Gyms for basket ball ect, ect  its a bargin, bargin for sure, I pay $43 a month with towel service, When I was looking at gyms last year the Y here with a pool was $75 a month so $ 60 seems good.

Wow, that small a town charges that much?

I don't pay anything right now (the base gym and pool here are good), but when I lived in Florida in a town WAY bigger than yours I paid about $35/month for a pool/gym (crappy YMCA).

$120 sounds like a lot to me, but if it's the only pool what are you gonna do?  I'd pay it too if it meant I could swim...

Since I became old a couple months ago, my gym membership hiked up $10 per month, and I am now paying $60 per month.  It seems high when I say it like that, but basically, I guess I am paying for convenience.  It's open 24/7 and is a half mile from where I live. Being open late gives me more flexibility (like swimming at 10:30 tonight) and being close makes it easier to get out the door. This past summer though, I largely had my membership frozen and was paying $10/month since I was able to train mostly outside. I like the fact that I was even able to freeze it. I'm generally a minimalist, so you can see where my priorities are!!  My cell phone bill is nearly half that.  (Okay, 2/3 - around $40.)

I get a free membership at the Gold's where I work, but we don't have a pool. I pay $35 / month for LA Fitness which has a pool. Doesn't your local high school have a pool? Most have regular public swims for a few dollars that include a few lanes for lap swimming.

My locally-owned gym recently got bought out by a large national chain.  My dues went from $39/mo. down to $9.95/mo., with a $30 annual membership fee.  At the same time the new owners doubled the size of the gym and replaced all the equipment.

For swimmng, I use a county-run pool.  It costs $4/day or $2/day for seniors over 55 (like me).

I live in a city of about 260,000 and pay just under $500 a year for a city facilities pass. I can theoretically swim at all the pools in town (2 leisure centers, 2 aquatic centers) but in reality the leisure center pools are too hot and crowded to do anything in. These facilities have weight rooms, 'though not particularly good ones. One facility has no pool but does have a small running track where track and field events are run in winter. One of the aquatic centers has a 50 meter pool, but it's so frequently closed for things like water polo meets and swim meets, you have to phone first on weekends to make sure there even is a lane swim. Non-club swimmers seem to be last on their list of priorities, even though it's a tax-funded facility.

When I lived in a city of just over 1 million, there was a much wider choice of city facilities for about the same price. So, the smaller the town or city, the fewer the choices.

Private sector facilities are usually more expensive. Personally, I wouldn't pay $120 a month unless it was within 10 minutes walking or cycling distance from home, opened very early in the morning (say, 5:30 a.m.) and offered free personal training. Even then it would be a stretch.

Swimbikeron - 2012-12-06 12:48 AM $60 a month for a family of 4 - YMCA membership.

X2 - in a town of 5000 people, 25m pool, full weight area, indoor track (we are in Maine after all), two basketball courts, lots of classes. Totally worth every stinkin' penny.

$230 per year 1.5 miles for my house. Pools are all indoor 8 lane short course, plus 4 additional 20 yrd lanes, plus water slide lazy river etc. Hot tub. 1/10 mile indoor track, 60 plus cardio machines, weight machines and free weights, 4 basketball courts, climbing wall. Indoor play area for kids. Meeting rooms and various rooms for exercise classes. Child care available for $2 per hour.

My wife is working on her PHD at Ohio State so she has access to all of their facilities for "free". I think that I can get a spouse ID to use some of the stuff at certain times. But a 20 minute drive and parking issues. I have some interest in playing racket ball which I could do there.

Years ago, my husband and I signed up for a three year memebership (I think it was something like $550 each for those three years)....after which point, our yearly fee would be $49 each.  It's nothing fancy (well, some are more fancy than others), but I have access to a pool, treadmills, weights, etc.

Even if we move somewhere that doesn't have 24 Hour Fitnesses, we will continue to pay our $49x2 / year just so we never lose out on our ridiculously cheap memberships!

I pay $3 a month. It's actually $23, but I get reimbursed $20 for "Wellness" if I go 8 times a month.

I belong to a University rec facility. They actually have two, one on each campus. The other campus has a GORGEOUS one with tons of machines, multiple aquatic facilities, steam room and sauna, etc etc (and they are finishing up a HUGE addition). Working out over there is a paradise. No wait for machines--unimited use of cardio (30, 60, 90, 120 minutes? No problem!.

The one on my campus is small, but it does have the basics...some cardio stuff, classes, a climbing wall, pool, two weight rooms, etc., so it's fine. Not awesome, not great, but serviceable, esp. for $3. I'd love to be on the other campus daily, but whatever. First world problems!

I'm lucky.  My gym is literally across the street from my office and has a 25y pool.  Membership is $32/month, but with a local business discount and insurance company discount it comes to a whopping total of $12/month.

I pay $50 a month, which is a good price for downtown Toronto. It doesn't have a pool, but I have a community centre pool around the corner from my house which only costs $100 for 6 months.

I pay about $50 a month for my gym membership but that is with a discount from my employer. I only usually go for the pool and because they have a masters swim team that I can swim with. Every now and again I will use the treadmill and do spin classes. I think its worth the money for the regular pool use but I would not pay much more.

Fees at my gym are about $145 I think for my wife and I, but it is a higher end gym with all the normal gym things plus a 25 yard lap pool, outdoor running/walking path through woods, therapy pool, Japanese treament pool, Pilates, full spa, small clothing and gift store, restaurant, and very hands-on help.  It operates with a more holistic, mind-body approach to health with lots of free seminars, speakers, diet help, etc., and attracts mainly older clientele looking for that extra service touch.   Plus it is only 2 miles away.

mine started at $45/mo (with a 3yr contract) for access to "all" of the locations of the gym in the area. After over 10 years I pay $19/mo month to month now.

A new gym with a pool has opened up closer to home, but they want $60/mo and aren't 24/7... so it's still driving to swim for me.

$142/month and that's with a discount (wife works for largest employer in Baltimore).  24 hour facility, 25M lap pool, tons of weights and cardio machines, 4 different studios, tons of free classes, and 9 or so locations.  There is also free child care, an onsite PT office, and a day spa.

Spendy but it's a nice place, 1 mile from the house, masters classes, and has a swim team for my daughter.
