Master 2167 Livonia, MI | Subject: RE: Your Gym Membership Lifetime Fitness--free since I'm an employee, group fitness Their fees are higher than other gyms in the area but they offer more equipment than the others, about 200 classes a week and very highly rated free child care. They have indoor and outdoor pools, all are free to use. I think what they charge is fair for what you get with the membership. |

Champion 14571 the alamo city, Texas | Subject: RE: Your Gym Membership husband and i each pay $10/month plus $29/year fee to belong to planet fitness and have access to weights and a treadmill on rainy days. i pay $55/30 visits to the community center pool - 50mx25m beautiful pool with good enough facilities. i was paying about $44/month for a gym with a 25m pool and had some classes i really liked, but i used the gym exactly 0 times from april through september. i was tired of paying so much money for nothing, at least with planet fitness i am throwing away a lot less money and my pool i pay per use. it's a HUGE savings ($353 a year for both of us, as opposed to $528 for just me at the old gym) but i do miss the classes, and the fact that i changed jobs and now work a block from the old gym |

Me, too : ) except I work in Kid's Activities/Youth Fitness Coach and Life Time Run! Prior to working there I paid about $72 dollars a month for a single membership as my husband isn't on the membership ($12 of that was the add on to use the Child Center for 2 kids @$6/month per child) They offer so much in their facilities, and when comparing to the nearby LA Fitness, the child care just didn't come close and that was really important to me as the kids come with, you just can't beat LTF's Child Center, IMO. I was only going to save about $10 or so at LA Fitness with child care, and the step down in services offered in the child center was not worth my saving only about $10/month, nor did the super small pool compared to what I was getting at Life Time with multiple pools. Everyone is looking for different things when choosing a gym, I don't feel one can compare cost from one to the next, as gyms aren't always apples to apples IMO, as they all have their differences. Regular 789 | Subject: RE: Your Gym Membership I pay 25/month for the gym in the building I work in. It has weights, some treadmills, some spinning bikes. Nothing super fancy as it is more of a gym where trainers work at but offers memberships for others who don't want training. I also have a family membership to the YMCA at 68/month. This is my family of 6. Nice thing about the Y is we have 3 of them here in Spokane and if I got out of town I can use the Y there too without having to pay so it is a nice benefit I think. The Y closest to our house is only 2 years old with nice weights, machines, and a 6 or 8 lane pool. The other 2 Y's are not as nice but I swim at the downtown one at lunch usually since it is close to my work. Don't ask me why I still keep the 25 dollar one other than I get free training help from the trainers so I guess that is an added benefit for the cost. |

The childcare (included) pays for the entire membership. Without it, it would be nearly impossible for me to do a 90 min masters or solo swim on the weekend and/or holidays. They have child hours in the evening as well, but I tend not to take the little one there then. |

Master 8247 Eugene, Oregon | Subject: RE: Your Gym Membership I pay a ridiculous amount for my gym membership, roughly $100 a month, which is more than most people's income in Vietnam. It's a very posh club by local standards--all imported equipment from Italy, personal trainers, etc. and wouldn't be out of place in a major US city. However, it's the only gym with the equipment I need within an easy walk/ride of my house. I'll have to admit I don't make full use of the membership. They don't have an "equipment and pool only" option, which is what I really want. It includes free access to all the classes, and I very rarely do them. Most are yoga or "sexy dance"; tried a few spinning classes but it was mostly in Vietnamese and made my achilles hurt. More of a solitary exerciser anyway. It's my only access to weight training equipment, my backup pool when the school one is closed for meets or holidays or if I want a quick recovery swim on Sundays; I use the stationaries (set up like road bikes in aero) for some of the Jorge workouts since it has a power meter that I've corollated to my road bike on a trainer, and I sometimes use the treadmill for bricks or when I need to run after dark. Not getting my $$ worth, but I don't have many choices here. I feel it's worth it as it allows my training to be much more consistent than it would otherwise, esp. during rainy season when the weather's very unreliable. In the US, I can pay $6.50 (I think it's $5.50 or $5 with a punch card) a pop to get access to a pool at a community center which also has weights, treadmills, and lower-end stationaries; a similar fee gets my bike and me onto the computrainer at our tri club as a member. When I'm in the US, I use those facilities about 3X per week, so I'd then be paying about $60/ month for the same equipment in less posh surroundings. |

Expert 1224 Is this Heaven? No, it's Iowa. | Subject: RE: Your Gym Membership $72 / month Family membership at our YMCA. 8 lane 25 yard indoor pool. 50 meter outdoor pool during the summer. Great equipment. Awesome indoor kid pool with slides and water toys. Great spin class. In fact, the Y is our Tri Clubs "Home Gym" and is very friendly to club organized events in the pool, treadmills, classes etc. Needless to say, I think $120 is a little steep. |

The irony is I joined a gym when I was a weightlifter, now that I'm a triathlete I use the gym only for the swimming pools and light weights. Toying with saving the the $$$, but a good swimming pool is hard to come by around here, and its nice to know I can go in most US cities. |

Extreme Veteran 1332 | Subject: RE: Your Gym Membership Damn, some people get great deals at gyms!! Up here in BC, Canada I'm paying about $130 per month including taxes, but that includes myself, my wife and our 2 kids. Includes all the standard weight and cardio equipment, all sorts of spin classes, trx classes, yoga etc. the occasional personal trainer review, pool, kids have swimming lessons, they can do karate as well. If they're under 6 there is childminding so I can drop them off while I work out as well, very handy. Overall I feel like we get a good value for our money |

Expert 2189 Dodge County, MN (out in the corn) | Subject: RE: Your Gym Membership We pay around $130 for a couple's membership to a full service gym. Two pools (lap and family), nice locker rooms, lots of classes, nicely maintained machines and an indoor track. It's kind of $$$, but since we go an average of 5 days a week, I think it's worth it. If nothing else, I'm saving on water for showers, shampoo/conditioner/body wash (provided by gym) and towels (also provided). |

Champion 10471 Dallas, TX | Subject: RE: Your Gym Membership jayhawk_sean - 2012-12-06 9:32 PM So, I (we) broke down and got a gym membership (my wife and I). Once we moved, I lost out on space for my home gym, picked up triathlon, and now need a pool to swim in (500 yds about killed me this summer). So, I want to train through the winter and pick it back up once I recover from my ACL injury. Our gym membership together will run us about $120 a month. Very nice facilities, lots of machines, treadmills, free weights, and of course...the pool. I live in a town of about 25,000 - there are two other gyms that I can think of off the top of my head, however - they do not include a pool. I was just wondering what everyone paid for their gym memberships - to see if this is a reasonable price or not. Granted, I have to pay it - but it just seems kind of high. Lifetime Fitness- one location - one person- $45 a month. They have a really, nice, warm pool. When I am IM training, I start this membership up. Otherwise, I put it on hold and swim with my tri club or on my own at 24 Hour Fitness. 24 Hour Fitness - nationwide - Active and Sport - one person - $120 A YEAR. Years back I did this deal where I paid for 3 years up front. Now I renew the membership for $120 a year. The pools kind of suck (no overflow, water is iffy, and usually very cold), but can't beat $120 a year. |

1 | Subject: RE: Your Gym Membership Hey guys and gals- just wanted to chime in here as this is the exact reason we as a company exist. About 6 months ago, we developed a website where people can share how much they pay at their gym in order to ensure they're getting a good price when a gym representative sits down with them. We figured if you sit down with a printout of what other people are already paying at that same gym, you'd have all the information you need to negotiate a good rate. We also built in the ability to filter gyms by amenities (track? pool?) and any gyms in town that are running a deal on sites like Groupon and LivingSocial. We'd really appreciate it if you could give us some feedback - we hope you find it useful. Site;s over at GymSnoop.com |
