My 10 year old daughter and I ran in today's Frosty's 5K in Virginia Beach, VA.

Here are our results (know that she actually finished ahead of me, but we were given the same time):

Jocelyn ranked 921 or 1791 over all, 22 of 67 in her AG, and 551 of 1229 females. Her chip time was 38:41 and her gun time was 44:44. She set the two of us a 12:29/mile pace.

I ranked 920 over all, 43 of 72 in my AG, and 370 of 562 males.

WHere I know my times could have been much better, this race wasn't about me at all. It was a way to bring my daughter into triathlon. She had a blast during the race, and when she gets the certificate she's earned, I'm really hoping it will spark her to want to train harder and go faster next time.

Thanks!!  She's ready to do more.  She's also super stoked to do a triathlon.  She keeps harrassing me to get her out riding and swimming.

That is pretty cool.  I did the ten miler, but I also did the 5 mile race at Busch Gardens the week before and was surprised to see how many kids were running the 5 miles with their parents.  Nice to see kids out getting some exercise and families doing something like that together.

That's awesome, but - IMHO, of course - I wouldn't push a 10 year old to "train harder" and "go faster." This should be fun for her ... and will hopefully be a lifelong hobby. You don't want her to burn out at 12.

I only nudge her to do what I know she can do.  I try to get her to focus her energies.  I tell her that she's in charge of whether or not she gets faster or goes longer.  I do set some minimums for her and some goals (like "gimme a mile before trying to walk"), but I never force her into a particular pace.  When we raced, I let her go; I just stayed near her to watch over her.  After having seen the turn out of LEOs at the race this weekend, I won't have any issue of letting her run the race the way she wants next year.  I will plant in her head that I think she could pull of a podium finish if she wants, but that's it.
