Subject: Triathlons affordable?
This will be my first triathlon season. I did an xterra off road sprint and the tri rock sprint last summer. I want to do 4-5 races in 2013. I live in San Diego but am willing to travel a little for races. Any suggestions on the best races for the best price in SoCal?

Here are some I haven't done:

Super Seal Sprint in SD is under $100. http://superfrogtriathlon.com/

Encinitas Sprint Tri is under $100 also. http://encinitastriathlon.com/

This event company seems to have a bunch of Sprint Tri's in the SD area:

http://www.kozevents.com/

HITS Triathlon series has a bunch of distances at affordable prices, many locations. http://hitstriathlonseries.com/

Some I have done, most are a bit later in the season (Sept+):

Long Beach Triathlon, usually around $100 http://thelongbeachtriathlon.com/

Turkey Tri in San Dimas, usually $100 http://renegaderaceseries.com/index.php?view=details&id=21%3Aturkey-tri-pumpkin-pie-kids-du&option=com_eventlist&Itemid=146

Tri Carson (Reverse), under $100 http://www.tricarson.com/

Race on the Base, Los Alamitos (Reverse) - this one is in February, $85 http://www.raceonthebase.com/

Hopefully others will reply with more info for you. You can also check these race event search sites for area tri's:

The cheapest one (but still excellent support!) that I have done is Camp Pendleton.  It is in August. I believe it is only $70 which is a bargain compared to most.  It is a sprint race, but a tough sprint because the ocean swim is always rough and the bike is rolly.

Totally agree with the Camp Pendleton Sprint.  The swim WORE ME OUT and from my point of probably is not a good first triathlon.  It challenging!

Man, Camp P used to have THE BEST oly distance, and only $70 or so.  Got rid of it a couple seasons ago for some reason.  That was a great race

There was a cheap Oly distance done in Playa Del Ray the same week of Magic Mountain Man.

I'm thinking of doing that race this year.

UCSD's expanded their Tritonman race to a 2-day event (draft-legal the first day)- half-Olympic distance, $70 for open (and less than that if you're a member of TCSD, too). Feb 23-24th, should be some good early-season action.

Also the race transition area is actually on grass (not mud like it's been in the past), so that's always a plus...
