Was loading some groceries into the truck today when a car pulls into the lot with IRONMAN painted on the hood and some other custom markings with some tri stickers. Very official looking vehicle with Japanese plates on it. "WOW" I says to myself. I can't wait to see who gets out. And I start picturing this mega athlete and I'm thinking that maybe I can say hi to him or her and start a convo or something. Well, five minutes pass by and finally the door opens and this beat up old haggardly looking guy shuffles out smoking a cigarette.

I kinda feel like I was on a hidden camera show.

Was it a Japanese guy?  Per capita, Japanese nationals tend to smoke about twice as much as Americans.  I wouldn't be surprised if their athletes feel it's okay (culturally) to smoke and train at the same time.

I got a training partner that is a smoker. He did IMFL with me for his first IM and went 10:53. We didn't even get him into tris until March of this year. He is looking to BQ in Feb.

One of the fastest kids on my track team in HS was a chain smoker and never really ran... in fact at his first practice he was running in Chuck Taylors.  He didn't make it the full season for various reasons, but it really pizzed me off that this guy was smoking me on the track and then would celebrate with a smoke on the side of the track.

Did he have one of the limited edition Isuzu VehiCross vehicles? Those things are cool:

I'm sure these guys could kick most of our butts, even with their 25 pound steel bikes and cigarettes:

Interesting article about how scientific studies can be manipulated to come up with the results you want. In this instances smoking is good for distance running.

Mario Lemiuex who is considered one of the top 4 hockey players (Gretsky, Orr, Howe being the other 3) of all time was a pack a day smoker during his prime.

Clearly he was driving his wife's car.

Women tend not to be that egotistical.  I'm betting on it being his son's car.
