I don't know what else is out there, but I've got the RXL Hilo's and LOVE them.  Of course, I also have nothing to compare them to as they're the only bike/tri shoe I've ever owned, but they absolutely rock, to me.  SUPER comfy, made to be worn without socks, great ventilation (or drainage should you choose to join the yellow sock club).

Go to a store and try on the shoes. We've all got different foot dimensions, and companies will generally keep the same "style" throughout most of their standard shoes unless otherwise stated. If you fit Scott really well then you can pretty safely assume the rest of Scott shoes will fit well. Same thing persists through Bontrager, Specialized, etc.

X2 on the RXL hilo's, absolutely love these shoes.  I originally wore a pair of Shimano TR31's but they were too narrow for me (I have these for sale, size 43).  The hilo's have a wider toe box that works better for my foot, I wear 2E wide running shoes.

I love Sidi shoes. They just fit my foot better than anything else I have tried. Unfortunately they are pretty expensive but for as much as I use them I am willing to pay the money.

Size 42 Sidis are perfect for me. Size 41 Specialized are way too big--I bought a pair this year to replace my Sidi shoes and since then I have bought another pair of Sidis because the Specialized just didn't work out--money not well spent on my part. Diadora I think I have a 41.5 and they are ok. I think I am done playing the field with cycling shoes.

I only post the above paragraph to emphasize what others have said. You need to try them on and even then you might be wrong. I tried on the Specialized shoes and thought they were perfect but have since stopped using them. They might be available for cheap if someone wants them. I usually wear an 8.5-9 and I think they are too big.

I love my Shimano TR52's. They are very comfortable without socks and well ventilated. Also easy to get into and out of on the fly.

Can get a pair of size 12.5 Chrome Hilos for $49 from Trek right now. Anyone have anything against them?I usually like trying stuff on before buying, but that price is wicked good.

I will just throw it out there, but I love my Pearl Izumi Tri Fly 3 carbon shoes.  I am thinking about the Tri Fly 4 carbons and know that there was a really good deal on them at Zappos the other day. Don't want to give up my 3s though.

I use the XL Hilos and love them.  My only reccomendation, through the insoles away and get some of the specialized insoles.  They make a huge difference.

I got a pair of LG (the cheapest tri-bike shoe).

As in my size (14-15/49-50) most shops don;t have anything for me to try on...

The Sidi T... whatever number they're up to (2.5?) is absolute luxury. Light, thin sole, stupid fast and very trim fitting.

Also, Bont shoes are super nice and their tri shoe is nice. If you don't like the trim fit of Sidis you'll like the big toe box on Bonts.

x2, although I have the TR 51 (assuming just a slightly older version?)

I had the Shimano TR-51's and currently use the Northwave Tribunes.  I like both of them.  The Northwaves have a cool reverse velcro area so that your strap stays fully open if you leave your shoes on the bike.

I've got pair of Shimano TR52s, very comfortable and as mentioned earlier, well ventilated. I guess it also depends on how much you want to spend. Maybe you cannot only try them on in a store, but even go for a test ride, to find out whether you would definitely want a carbon fibre sole or not. Ultimately it is up to you and what you feel most comfortable with and worth spending money on.

I've got the Shimano TR52s as well - very nice shoe, and when I wear 'em out, I'll probably buy another pair.

I used to use the Shimano TR-51's and liked them a lot. Recently bought the latest Sidi T 3.6.....WOW! The Shimano's aren't even close. Granted, these are spendy shoes, but worth it IMO.

I have the Pearl Izumi Tri Fly 3's as well and like them a lot. My first and only bike shoe so far. Light, drain well, sockless is great, easy to get on and off etc. I like them.

Specialized Trivents.  I have an older model I'm still wearing after 6 years and bought last year's model but have only used those for a couple of rides.  They did have 1 or 2 years without a heel strap, pretty bad oversight for a tri bike shoe.

I like the loop on the back for easy slip on.  I like the body geometry ergonomics too.  Helped fix a pain in the knee problem.
