Well I had a 10K race this weekend in which I had to finish in less than 50 minutes to get seeded for an upcoming race. I was actually worried about it because I haven't run in less than 50 minutes ever. Well I managed to eke out a 46:39 Sunday. I don't know how considering the course was really hilly but hey, I'll take it!!! I have one more race to qualify so I'm thinking I'll do that and try to move into the 45-minute group or, if I have a GREAT day, the 44-minute group.

congratulations - amazing what a bit of adrenaline can do. I have only done 2 races so far this year, a 5k and a sprint tri and massively exceeded my expectations on both. My 5k pace I had never done before in training and have never done since in training!

A bit of competition is good!

Great Job on the new PR. It is always a great feeling to cross that line and see a new PR that suprises even yourself. Had that kind of moment a few weeks back in a 10k were I finished under 50. I like how you set a 45-minute goal for your next. Always keep moving forward. Great job.

Thanks folks. Yeah I was freakin' out last week -- those who saw my thread last week know that, and those who responded gave me great motivation along the course.

One thing that actually helped I think was forgetting my watch at home. I had NO idea how fast I was going -- I would just try to keep pace with the person in front of me. When that person pulled away I latched onto another runner. I recalled someone's sig-line that said they "find a tail" and try to keep up with it. I did that a couple times but those men were FAST! As were the women whose tails I followed. Anyway it seemed to work.

At the end I tried to race a guy to the finish but he had more left than I did and beat me by three seconds. I blame it on my short legs.

Oh and look at that -- I'm an "extreme veteran" now with my 300 posts!!!

Yeah...I did that at MIami Man last year (purposefully as an experiment), and had the race of my life. So many times I've hit the brakes because I was going "too fast". I think I need to listen to my body more and worry about the clock less.

wow, you ARE extreme..... ha ha.

i was one of those who read your thread last week so i wanted to pop back in and say "HEY, you ROCKED!!" and also a little "i told ya so!" (light heartedly, ofcourse) in that we have a tendency to go a little harder come race day when we are mixed with adrenaline, excitement and that extra pull of competition. and we do the same thing - i find some chick out there and keep up with her. if i pass her, i find another one and so on. except if she's SUPER fast, than i blame something (but certainly NOT my lack of speed training, haha) and just go as fast as i can. and for me, i never wear a watch - keeps me focused on my body and i believe if i'm giving it my best than that's all i can do. i won't need a watch to let me know i'm running too slow, i can tell by not being able to catch that CHICK!!!! DAMN IT!!!!!

anyway, great job and good luck qualifying. you can TOTALLY do it, dude

Hey thanks! Yeah I NEVER blame my lack of training -- it's NEVER my fault!

"It was the cup of coffee I had two hours before."
"I shouldn't have had that orange wedge."
"If only I'd warmed up more."
"If only I'd warmed up less."

This list could go forever.
