I'm a little surprised at the comments about not traveling that far for "a short race".  Maybe a lot of people just don't know enough about these events.  They're not your typical local sprint or oly.

Here's a highlight video from last year's oly championships:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=me4tZ42cfRE

I'm in.  I was going to do an Xterra but my coach is pushing me toward this race.  It's not too far from me so it seems to be worth the experience.

Agreed.  It is not just a regular race.  This is the National Championships.

And keep in mind, they may, one day, change qualification for it.  Make it harder.  So if you qualify now, doesn't mean you will qualify again.  If you can go, do it.  The experience is worth it.

I got my second qualification email today.

I was one of the ones who said it was too far away, but I'm tentatively considering it. Seems the weather in August would probably be better than the weather here in DC, and might be an excuse to visit friends in Chicago. I'm just still new to triathlon and freaking out about traveling long distances with my bike.

ETA -- that YouTube video is very cool.

I qualified. I want to focus on Oly distance next year. I guess I should consider it. Plus - not a ton of races in AZ in August...

Hm...

I know!

I'd like to find my potential (or at least attempt to) at all distances. I don't see any of the distances  as more worthwhile than others. A race with a platform of this scale and caliber could set one up to do some great things and some good motivation.

Don't forget about Mountain Man!! Probably my FAVORITE race in AZ...In fact, it will possibly be the determining factor in my decision not to go to WI. Ironically, Mountain Man is the race that qualified me to go to the Nationals in the first place.

I'd like to give this a shot through qualifying at the Mid-Atlantic Regional Qualifier in NJ.  The only issue is that it's less than 3 weeks prior to the Nationals, and for me to book the airfare and hotel and transport on a (less than) 50/50 shot at making it is a little much.

I did look at the past 2 years of results for my age group, and there's a shot that with some solid improvement I could make the cut.

Do you think USA Triathlon might grant a deferment to 2014 despite the date cutoff they just recently published?  I left a voicemail and email for the National Events coordinator, but I have to think this is a common problem.

ponderingfox - 2012-12-13 6:55 AM I had a friend qualify for this who was the only person in her age group, lol.  I need to go find one of those backwater races!

I qualified twice last year...both times had 3 people in my age group! I felt so special

It will sell out pretty early in the year.  You probably want to look for an early season race to qualify with.

I just got off the phone with USAT - they are firm on that date deadline thing.  I guess if I manage to qualify I'll have to try to figure out a way to get to Milwaukee somehow.

If you can make the schedule work, go!! I was in Burlington the past 2 years, absolute blast. Re: "It's just an oly," w/o a doubt it is a destination event worth the travel. BTW, just b/c you may think it is easy to qualify, it is certainly a deep field. The race will be fast & furious. Due to travel conflicts I cannot go this year but you can bet I will be going again in '14! Everytime I watch the USAT video it takes me back to the race & great memories. I even managed to make a cameo in the '11 video. Bottom line, if you can make it work, definitely do Nats!! Never know when you may qualify for Worlds.

I qualified last year but didn't go. In 2011 I qualified for the HIM distance and went to SC. It was AWESOME.

These are some of the best AG athletes in the country, so the speeds are amazing. It was humbling and fun to go.
