I have an iPhone and a Timex Run Trainer, but no Garmin. I like riding routes off Strava and MapMyRide, but I'm having trouble figuring out the best way to stay on course. Last time, I used my phone and just had to keep unlocking and checking my map on the phone screen. Does anyone have a better way?

a lot of the popular routes in greenville are marked with painted arrows on the roads at each turn, maybe try checking some of those out.

Nope, I gave up being lost all the time on new routes and bought the Garmin. Cue sheets are good, but with a lot of turns I still got lost.

Don't get lost, just change where it is you want to be.

Bike with a buddy that can follow instructions.  Perhaps a female buddy cause we know males don't like directions.  Tongue out

Has anyone followed a pre-uploaded route using a 910XT?  Good?

This is always a problem for me as well.  I used to print out and even laminate turn-by-turn cue sheets and attach to my bars.... but without my reading glasses, I can't figure out what's coming next.

Now, I pretty much just stop and pull out my iphone periodically and figure out where.

Ok, I'm not against memorizing the directions, but I can't remember 25 turns...it just isn't going to happen. It sounds like I'm going to have to stick with the iPhone or upgrade to a Garmin. I just like using the Strava and MapMyRide apps to log them, so I wish that they could show me on a map as I ride.

If you have an iPhone you can just set it to never auto-lock for your workout. It does eat up your battery pretty quick that way though, turning your back-light brightness down will help though.

I have a mount for mine that basically puts the phone on top of the stem and then I use Map My Ride and it shows me where I am and where the route goes.

I will review the route on Google maps, do street view (if available) of areas/turns I'm not familiar with, and keep a handwritten que sheet in a plastic bag (don't ride with reading glasses so need big bold sharpie writing)

I tape the route notes to my stem. Alternately, stuff it in jersey pocket.

I tried just memorizing my route once. I was on vacation in Utah last summer, but I'm not familiar with the roads at all. Being from Kansas and being relatively new to cycling, I wanted to ride a mountain pass. Tried to memorize the route to get myself into and up big cottonwood canyon in slc. Rode up, rode down. Had a blast. The next day, when I drove up with my family to hike in the canyon, I realized that I had actually ridden the wrong route (went up little cottonwood instead). So maybe stopping to check the phone map isn't such a bad idea.....

This.

You can also get battery extenders compatible with bike mounts like the one by wahoo fitness.

I draw a map (rather than a cue sheet) and refer to it if I really need it, it's probably not the "best" method, but I find that people become overly dependent on GPS.  I will occasionally get lost, but I've had some fun rides and found some great roads that way.  If you are riding somewhere away from home though, its probably best to have some sort of navigation, and even actual maps in case you have issues with your tech.

bzgl40 - 2012-12-17 1:20 PM cue sheets attached to your handle bar.

This.  Put it in a ziploc in case it rains.  Also, keep a separate sheet in your saddle bag if you're afraid of getting lost (you may lose the one you're using).  I've used this method for rides up to (and over) 600 miles long.  Of course, you can use GPS, etc., but this works fine.

My experience exactly.  And as another poster said, ALWAYS ride with a ziploc baggie.

How complicated are these riding routes?

If I'm going somewhere new and complicated I'll tape a cue sheet to my top tube, and if I happen to wander off course I always have my phone to check to get back on course.

I have an absolutely abysmal sense of direction and I always manage to find my way around... is it really that complicated?

For unfamiliar rides I write up a detailed turn by turn cue sheet including landmarks, overpasses, etc.  Oh and those strava segments

How big are they for you? 50+ lines to fit in isn't really unusual for me around here, so having it on a device (Edge 800) is kind of nice. There just aren't many sections of road where we can do mile after mile up here. And I'm actually curious because from what I know of the general area the road crossings are spread much farther apart.
