Pre-race routine:

I slept in late since the race did not start until 1pm. I drove up to stay at my aunts house which is only a half hour drive from the race site. I wanted to show up early because I like being really early for everything so I got there about 3 hours before the start. I did not get a very good parking spot compaired to last year. I had to walk about a quarter mile to the transition area. The competitive race was going on when I got there and I cheered the runners on as they passed me. I checked in first then hauled all my stuff to the transition area. They opened the transition area for the recreational distance competitors about a hour before the race. I got a decent spot then had to walk back to my car because I forgot my socks. I was debating whether I really needed them but decided I would get them anyway. When I got back, I got into my wetsuit and headed down to the water.
Event warmup:

I usually don't warm up before races but it was so hot out, I decided that it would be nice to get in a little bit just to cool off. I swam out a little bit. The water was perfect. A bit cold when you first get in then it felt great. I stayed in the water until they announced the pre-race meeting was going to start.
Swim
  • 07m 15s
  • 547 yards
  • 01m 20s / 100 yards
Comments:

The waves in this race are self seeded and coed. I decided to go in the second wave because I did not want to get thrashed from all the fast swimmers in the first wave. I did not place myself very well in the line up for the start. I ended up getting caught behind a lot of slower swimmers and it took some time to find an opening to pass them. Once I found one, I sprinted away from the pack and got into my own groove. I lost sight of the bouy a bit but I did not get too off course. Once I rounded the bouy, I noticed that the people from the first wave had gotten way off course they were kind of curving away from the swim finish and ended up swimming farther than they had to. I sighted the orange cones for the swim finish and headed straight in for them. I passed a lot of people from the first wave.
What would you do differently?:

I wish that I would have trained more for this. I am a swimmer so I really don't need to train much for the swimming leg but I am kind of disappointed in my performance because I know I could have done so much better. I also should have gone in either the first wave or pushed my way up to the front of the second wave. My time was about 1:30 slower than last year.
Transition 1
  • 03m 31s
Comments:

I was just slow here. I was out of breath from the swim and was not looking forward to the hilly bike course I had coming. I took my time getting my shoes on and everything. I knew that my T2 time would be really short because I don't have clipless pedals yet so I would not need to change shoes.
What would you do differently?:

Go faster.
Bike
  • 52m 36s
  • 10 miles
  • 11.41 mile/hr
Comments:

This course just killed me. I am not good at riding hills. I did a pretty good job of keeping my cadence up. I was kind of annoyed by all the drafting I saw going on and hardly anyone called out to pass. I saw one guy almost get clobbered buy a girl because he passed her on the right. She had just passed me and was getting back over to the right side of the road. When I got to the monster hill, I told myself that I was not going to get off my bike to walk up it. Well, I made it half way. A lot of people had to walk up part of this hill. It is a killer.
What would you do differently?:

Train more on hills. I felt good on the flats.
Transition 2
  • 00m 37s
Comments:

All I had to do was rack my bike, throw my helmet off and go.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Run
  • 37m 5s
  • 2.6 miles
  • 14m 16s  min/mile
Comments:

My legs felt pretty good after getting of my bike. Unfortunately, I did not train enough for the run and I was really slow.
What would you do differently?:

Train more.
Post race
Warm down:

I saw my mom and my sister after the race and walked around. I drank some gatorade, ate some watermelon (so good!), half a banana and a poppy seed muffin. I collected my gear and headed back for the car.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I didn't train enough for this race. I knew this going into it but I am still disappointed in myself. I could have done better. The good news is, I now know where I am at in terms of my training and what I need to work on.

Event comments:

I love this race. It is one of my favorites. They always have a great t-shirt and the best part about them is that they are not white. I am not a fan of white shirts. The race site is beautiful and it is pretty well organinzed for the small race fee. It is the least expensive race I will do this year yet ranks at the top in my opinion.

So cool Triathlete. <img align='middle' src='https://beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/images/emoticons/smile.gif'>

I just got back from Potato land.  Actually there is a county in Washington that says it is the county with the most potatoes in the country.

You should use that swim performance to springboard to the other events.  Very strong.

I still dread the monster hill and the start of it is where I turn off to go home.  I never continue up it.....So my dented bike helmet is tipped to you on getting through it another year....<img align='middle' src='https://beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/images/emoticons/smile.gif'>

Nice job on your race and loved your race report.  So cool that your mom and sister were there with you.  Great way to spend an afternoon!
