rquinn23 - 2013-04-26 7:11 AM Happy Friday, everyone! I had a great day of training yesterday and a really tough swim this morning, but it was also great. For those of you who do heart rate zone training I have a question--I am now into the phase of my training where there is some zone 4 work thrown in the bike and run. I am having trouble getting my heart rate that high on the run, as it seems my legs hit their limit before my heart rate does. My workouts have called for both a 5 minute surge from zone 2 to zone 4, and 3 x 3min repeats at zone 4 with a 1 minute recovery. I am barely making it out of zone 2! On the repeats, I did reach my highest HR on the 3rd one, but it was still in zone 3. Again, I can't really seem to get my legs to go faster. Has anyone experienced this or have any input? Thanks!

Maybe use a treadmill to make your legs turn over faster and see what happens?  Not sure I can add to what everyone already mentioned.

I have noticed that my comfort zone has become even more entrenched with all of the long zone 1/2 workouts.  I really have to stay focused to keep my HR up on both bike and run or it will fall back down to my "comfort zone"  saying that I really like that spot as I can completely zone out!

I'm racing another sprint...swore after last year I wouldn't do excessive racing again (it makes it hard to train with a lot of focus for a longer race) BUT I LOVE IT SO MUCH!!!!  And this one only cost $25!  I'm training right through this one so I'm not expecting any fantastic results, but I would like to redeem myself on the crappy transitions of last week.

Becky, the only other thought I had on your HR zone question was that I had the same issue on the bike last year, when I was really new to the bike but came from a running background. I think that maybe my "engine" was relatively strong but my bike legs were just not able to keep up.  Probably doesn't apply to you because I know you're no beginner, but just a thought if you've been doing less running and more of other training recently.

Have a great weekend everyone.

Sprint tris are pretty short for a triathlon bike to shine in speed savings over a road bike.  Ride the one you feel fits the conditions best and you'll be more confident and safer on in the short races.  The mental aspect is probably as important as the reality of it.

I'm well.  Marathon is Saturday and I am set.  Running faster and farther than ever.  Training has been great. I am feeling ready run-wise for IM Moo, which was the point.  FTP on the bike is great.   No injuries.  Swim going very well with Masters and semi private lessons.  Weight is about 5 pounds higher than I like but then again, my strength training is adding upper body muscle so I am good with it.  % of fat is about 10.

All good.  Hope training is going well for you all.

 Good luck this weekend!

bdenehy - 2013-04-25 8:45 AM This is a big weekend for "Team Denehy". We are inducting our newest runner, 5 year old Louise. I'll be her pacer on a one miler Saturday. Now that our 7 year old has a few under his belt, he'll be going solo. Then my wife and I do the 5k. We are shooting for 45:00 with a run/walk. Sunday's a sprint du for me with 6 short (2.4 mile) bike loops. Never raced like that, so should be fun.Happy training all!

Awesome Bill way to get the family involved! It's so important.

Good luck Ice and Bill as well this weekend!!

Unwelded the bike from the trainer for today's 4 hour brick!  It is cool, 35-40, but sunny and no wind so I am going outside!!

My 4 hour brick is next week - sounds like the weather here will be similar to yours!

Starting to get really excited for my first Half!!!!  I have hit all my workouts for the last 5 or so weeks. This week was the first time I have had more than 12 hours in S/B/R. Only one more big volume week then taper!

Great work Robin!! Your training has been solid for this race!!

I think I have race rehearsal bricks the next 2 weekends, 3 hour bike with a 90 minute run off the bike.  Sometimes looking ahead at my plan scares me!! Embarassed

Awesome Ken, way to go!!!! Enjoy your ribs, you earned them! :-)

Anxious to hear how everyone else's races went this weekend.

Spring is finally here! Headed out for a 2 1/2 h bike & 15 min run after lunch in (hopefully) non-windy conditions. I'm so psyched!!

Fantastic racing Ken!I had a decent duathlon today and a great running day Saturday.I had one of my best med/long training runs and we made my wifes 5K goal with a minute to spare and the kids did their race. they had fun, but were more interested in th pony rides and playground :-) Now its time to be serious about tapering.. Hope all you other racers had great ones!Ice?

Hi All,

Ran a 10 mile today.

Not quite on top of my game.

Missed a lot of sessions...

...hip is painful...

...struggling.
