After my first race 2 weeks ago I thought that this past Sunday I might have a chance to place in the Under 39 Clydesdale division and was jazzed at the thought. Ended up 6th and am still jazzed.

Congratulations!

Everyone has their own reasons and own motivations for participating in this sport.  Some for the love of competition, some for the love of pushing themselves further than they thought possible, some for a little of both.

There has been much under-current thought of weight division competitors as being "second class" as compared to regular AGers.  Perhaps that's why there is still no official weight class division with USAT.  Who knows.  I really don't care.  People don't define me by their judgements, they only define themselves as someone who needs to judge.  I suppose the same could be said of those who don't like weight class included (this means you USAT).

Well said!

I know that I will never be an elite triathlete. But, it's nice to be able to compete with people like me. I have more than 200lbs of lean muscle mass. Even as a Super Clyde (225lbs) I would be racing at less than 10% body fat. I could never compete with someone my age who is 5"9 and 150lbs. Weight divisions give all of us big people a chance to enjoy the competition. Why are we such a threat to the regular age groupers?

But you know as well as I do that black neoprene, a BCD and a scuba tank are very slimming. I look very svelte 100ft underwater.

shadowfax - 2006-06-27 2:34 PM It's a lot more fun winning your age group, or even winning, or finishing top three for that matter then winning the Athena division. THAT is why I don't enter the Athena division, and I bet there is a bunch of people out there who feel the same.

Sure, it'd be more fun to win a whole gender, age group, or race than to win either a clyde or athena division.  It's always fun to win in a bigger group or a bigger race.  That's a given.  I don't see the athena or clyde divisions as diversions from that joy.  Your time is your time regardless of which group you enter!

I always register as Athena when given a choice.  I personally like to see women and men compete based on size as well as age, because at my ht/wt (6'0/165), it's hard to imagine a 5'0 pixie as my 'competitor'.   Just like I can't imagine the wiry guys or clydes as my competitors...I see no shame whatsoever in divisions based on size.

I'm confused. If I am a competitive age grouper, but well into the Athena realm (6'0 180 lbs), you think I should race Athena? You already agreed with me that winning a more competitive/challenging field is more fun, so why shouldn't I? I agree as well that there is no shame in competing in Athena/Clyde - my first race ever was in the Athena division which I won (not to mention winning the appropriate age group, which did not count), but with virtually no competition it was kind of boring. Not to mention USAT does not keep track of the Athena standings, which I think they should. I guess I am someone who is really fueled by the competitiveness, maybe to a flaw.

I would like it if Athenas and Clydes took the division seriously enough to register for it when appropriate.  Bring on the competition and let's get some big, fast, competitive triathletes out there!  Maybe the USAT would take us more seriously if we made the group more competitive by NOT age-grouping out of it?  That's what I was getting at.

Let's just not be defensive or shameful, boasting or prideful about it.

Hey, I gotta compete with this guy in clydes..... all of 201 and 6'4"

We're friends, and I give him sh** about it, but c'mon, look at me

<---------------------------------------------------

and look at him..  he definitely just does clydes so he can place (doesn't always).  He's a slow swimmer so he doesn't like to race his AG.  but his miles are sub 7:00.

Hmm, I have mixed feelings on this, in it's pure sense I agree, but then again I don't like to voluntarily be judged or compete based on how much I weigh. I understand that boxers, wrestlers, rowers...the list goes on and on are put in weight classes, but I guess what makes them different is that they have no choice, but to compete in the approprate weight class

As far as the USAT not taking it serious b/c the athletes are not taking it serious b/c the USAT does not take it serious b/c the ... you catch my drift? I guess I am just not an activist enough to take on this issue in real life, but you do have a valid point.

"Let's just not be defensive or shameful, boasting or prideful about it." Call me paranoid, but is this directed at me, and if so, why?

Absolutely NOT directed at you Fox...I think it's great that a clyde/athena can kick a$$ in AG.  I think this discussion merely opened up the topic of why weight class is not recognized more by the USAT and ITU.  It puts good athletes, like yourself, in a position to NOT WANT to race weight class because of lack of competition and the "unspoken" idea that weight class is a step down from regular AG divisions.

At least ATHENA  has a pleasant sound to it.

We are hung with CLYDESDALE.  A big powerful animal....YES.  Fast??  Not that I would guess....over long distanca anyway.

Why not tag us with the STEER or ANGUS division and let's not even go therer for a new name for the women's division.  I'm not going to stir up the crap that deep.

Hey!  If the Clyd/Athena thing gets people motivated and off the couch...it is a good thing.  I'll never bound up hills, run fast in high heat and humidity, or weigh under 200 pounds.  I do, often, place in my age division but I like the Clyd. division.  It motivates me, creates comradery amongst us Hubba Bubbas, and (yes I admit it) gives me a greater shot as some hardware.

So....who loses out?  Just me.  I lose a few pounds and some skinney slower guy gets a trophy in my age division because I opted for the Clyd. division.  It's a win/win.

I love that you little 230 pounders think you're big.  You are my goal weight.  Started in January at 265 lbs.  Currently at 257.5 lbs.  I don't think I even want to imagine myself at sub-200.  That's just not a mental picture that I would want.

I don't see weight-class athletics being any less competetive than age-class. Why don't the 40-49ers compete directly against the 20-29ers? It's just a different way of grouping up the people in a race so there can be more winners. Maybe everyone should have to register their weight -and- their age, that way you can divide up the results any way you want. Yup, you could have someone win twice in one race that way.

I started out at 260 (well, I peaked at 290+, but that is another story :-), and I'm down to 212. I would enter the clydesdale class if it were available at my races, because I have always compared myself to others my size, not my age. But then I wouldn't have been able to beat my 140 pound team mate in the last race (by a full 8 seconds :-) in the same AG.

It's even more appealing on land.
