Subject: How many races per season

I am new to triathlon, and am anxious for the season to roll around. I just ran a marathon, and am ready to get back to training for something other than just running.

I am curious how many races (and distances) most people run per season. Outside of a few 5k's here and there, I am planning on running 3-4 sprints (mostly because those are ones in which my kids can compete in), 2 Olympics, and finishing off this season with a HIM. Hopefully that's not too ambitious.

This is just my second year doing triathlons. I am 62 and I did 11 sprint triathlons in 2012. Good luck.

This year I did swim meet, 5k, 10k, HM, sprint, and 3x HIM.

For me I try not to race so often that I can't get in decent training volume.

I'm new as well and have been wondering the same thing. For 2013 I'm currently signed up for -

HM in January (PHX PF Changs)
Oceanside 70.3 in March
Olympic or HIM in June (Deuces Wild Show Low)
Olympic in August (Nathan Tri Tempe)
HIM in Sept (Soma Tempe)
IMAZ in Nov

Only question is whether or not to do the Olympic or HIM distance in June? This seems like an aggressive race volume for one calendar year but I'm working with a coach which should really help.

Thoughts?

In 2012 did 1 HM, 3 sprints and 1 Oly tri.  Was signed up for another Oly but had a bike crash a week before race and so I missed it.

2012- I got off the couch and did 1HIM, 2 Oly, 1 sprint DU, 2 marathons, 2 HM, and 1 century ride (with a few short races mixed in...). Plan for 2013: 3 HIM, 1 Oly, 3 FM, 2 century rides, 3-4 HM, ans a few short races. Plan for 2014: 1 Full IM, 1 century, 1 marathon, 1 HIM. 2013 will be about getting more comfortable with doing what I have already done. Lots of events and just having fun. 2014 is all about training and running an ironman. The other events will be earlier in the season and simply be training for the big day... Plan is subject to change :-)

I slowed down a little in 2012, I raced about the same as you  in 2011. This year, besides a couple of 5K I only ran one HM at Lost Dutchman, Olympic at Marquee and Nathans and SOMA HIM. I thought about Oceanside and volunteered at swim last year and found swim a bit too cold for me. I attempted IMAZ 2011 and could not handle 61 degree water in Nov. I have heard water temp at Oceanside is in fifties and I saw even Pros at last years Oceanside swim complaining about how cold the water was.

My first Tri season will be the 2013 summer. I only have time for 1/mo (june, july, aug) and likely will do 2 sprints and then an olympic.

You're new to the sport and doing 3 HIM and a full IM, among others, in your first season? Wow, that's ambitious.

This past season was my busiest yet. I I'd 6 olys and a sprint. Given the somewhat shortened Utah season, it was actually a bit much for me. I was starting to burn out toward the end of the year...

The shorter the races, the more you can do.

I raced from late February-Late September most weekends. 10+ crits, 5road races, 5sprints, 1HIM, 5HM, 1 full marathon. But I'm a competitive person and used some of those races as training sessions. It's a fun way to break up purely training for an event

this was my second year and I did 1 sprint last year; this year a shortened (bike) HIM in Boise, Lake Stevens HIM, and a sprint I did the year before.

this upcoming year 2013, I am doing IMCDA, maybe a HIM and a sprint. For me it isn't about me physically or mentally being able to do the races but rather a combination of wanting to be with my family doing things and also the cost for each tri.

Now I have a daughter that is showing more interest in tri's so hopefully she will want to do a couple of them. I'll do them with her even just for fun rather than competing.

My seasons are a mish mosh of races:

3 XTERRA off-road tri's

2 Off-road Duathlons

2 Half Marathons

1 12hr relay mtn bike race

1 cyclocross race

5 running races that ranged from 1 mile to 5 (Millenium Running Serices) so I could get the free jacket.

I like variety and I like time with my family so I try to stick to local races within 30 minutes of home for everything except the XTERRA races.

Will probably do two HIM's. I'm doing all these events, outside of Oceanside, with the tri group I train with. I'd rather do a schedule like this as opposed to a bunch of training and sprints, especially w/ IMAZ looming in Nov.

so I feel a little aggressive I have 5 HIM scheduled for the ear

HITS OCala

Rev3 Knoxville

Racine

REV3 Dells

Augusta

plus 3 or 4 sprints and Half marathon mixed in there it works out kinda of neat because I six weeks between each HIM until the last 2 where I have 4 weeks

In 2012 I did 2 sprints, 1 Oly, 1 HIM, and 1 half mary. That's about perfect for me since I stress out about the swim.
