Subject: The things I do for little woodland critters...or "storm rescue"

So, we've had 2 months worth of rain in the past 36 hours. My front and backyard are quite soggy to put it mildly - I live at the bottom of 2 hills and we've always suspected there was an underground spring in the backyard given how quickly it becomes a small lake.

So, I get brave and go check out the basement - it has been the scene of several spectacular floods, but a couple of years ago, we had full waterproofing done, pumps installed in the window wells, all that - the most excellent news is that it's working quite well, there is no water in the window wells and the basement is dry. However, out of the corner of my eye, I see a little frog up on the outside windowsill in the window well. Once he's down there, there is no way he can get back up to the actual backyard because of the depth of the window wells. (I know frogs have a good vertical leap, but it wouldn't cut it in this situation.)

Of course, I can't just leave him there! No, couldn't do that, especially considering he was trying to figure out how to get IN the house through the window. So, out to the backyard in the pouring rain, water up to my ankles in some spots in the grass and I get over to the windows, trying not to think about what other critters may be in the hostas & hydrangeas I'm pushing through (kinda like OWS). Turns out the cover on the window well had gotten knocked aside just enough for the frog to get down there. (I see the dog's handiwork there.)

So, I'm in the window well trying to corral a frog into a cup, the poor frog is terrified, but I GOT HIM! And the cover is now secured so he shouldn't be able to get back in and he can ride out the storms under the hostas.

I hope all the neighborhood critters know how good they have it in my backyard. I would have gotten pics, but he wasn't up for the publicity.

You are a kind and generous soul.  There is a special place for you on the other side.  Me?  I'm one snake over my karmic limit.

For someone into guns and miliary stuff, you're just a big ol' mushy bucket o' love.    Hope you're up for a Guinness.  That was quite a rescue!

Well, had it been a snake, I'd probably still be in the basement going, "AHHHHHHHHHHHH!" Yeah, this pretty much destroys my tough chick rep, but I couldn't leave him just stuck down there, especially with him trying to figure out how to get in the house.

Yep, cold one at my side (once I got myself in dry clothes...couldn't have been a break in the rain when I went out.)

Nothing wrong with a little juvenile humor. Besides, it's all part of the plan - drag 'em into the thread via the gutter.

Well, hang on there.  "He's trying to get in the house."  And do what?  Break up the place?  Tongue out

If he'd gotten in, you would have been well within your rights to shoot the hoary little green monster.  And then mount his head above your fireplace.

Well, I confiscated the tiny little glass cutter he had, so the homestead is safe for the time being.

And for the record.  I'm not afraid of snakes.  Snakes are afraid of me.  I am the St. Patrick of SoFla.  Snakes know if they see me, it's the last thing they're going to see before they take the big sleep.

Gah ... .
