Need advice on Saturday's tri. Weather is forecast for high 30s for the start and slow warming. It's an indoor swim and then outdoor bike and run. I'll probably be getting on the bike wet with the temp in the low 40s. Recommendations???

I just went through something similar, though it was a few degrees warmer.  The bike start for my tri last weekend was 48.  I pondered on what to do as well, but eventually decided to just tough it out.  Once I was on the bike and moving, I never noticed the cold.  Once I got back into transition though i had a little trouble as my fingers were now so cold and not wanting to cooperate with putting my shoes on.  Also took about a half mile of running for my feet to thaw out a little and stop feeling like bricks.  So looking back, maybe i would have worn gloves, but that is all I would have changed.

I would suggest a couple long sleeve dry fit shirts under your tri jersey (if no wind or if its a sprint you might be ok with 1), a pair of dry fit pants with your tri shorts or a pair of long bike pants, warm socks & a pair of neoprene shoe covers. You could ditch the long pants & 1 shirt after the bike. If its a sprint, then you could get by without the shoe covers. Oh yea definitely a pair of gloves!

first off pray for those injuried or affected in Boston.

Hope,   My plan for Saturday is to tough it out.    if it is over cast I might have a bike jacket to put on quick.  if it is at all sunny I will suffer and go.    Looking forward to seeing you there.

Yes Hammer Australia prays for the injured and the ones that passed.  Hope they catch the guys.

Congrates Dominion, awesome work, luv the pics.  Sounds like a horrendous morning but you did it well in the end.

Well my prep was terrible for my A race.  Sons 21st, I got a bit squiffy and was hung over on the Saturday and had damn McD's.  All in all not to bad a race though.  Swim was tough and felt longer than 300m - 10.49mins, my chain came off in the bike but I fixed it and got back on and didn't change gear again - 10km - 26.55 incl T1 & T2, my run was a little slow 2.5km - 13.06mins.  Total 50.51 and 3rd in the 45+ age group.  Very happy I got a medal.

Thanks for the baby powder trick its great.  All done for this season.  I tried out my wetsuit today...gotta get used to it but it shouldn't take long, can't believe how much faster it made me. Its great.

Good luck on your races guys will check back after the weekend to see how you all went.  GO T3

Hey Run,

Thanks for taking the time to read my race report and the encouraging comments.  Yes, it was a rough start to the day, but overall it was a great experience and I can't wait for my next one in a few weeks!

It sounds like you had some obstacles to overcome as well.  Great job on getting that chain back on and finishing strong.  Top 3 in your AG is awesome!  Congrats on that medal!!

Thanks Dominion.  You should be very happy with your first tri.  No more fumbling with shoes laces and a few lessons learned.  Good luck with the next one I look forward to reading your next race report.

Good luck today guys, I know it's too late for you guys to see this before the race but I wanted you to know I'm pulling for you from afar! I just realized my first for the year is next Sunday, it's a du, I hope it warms up before then, I'm tired of being cold! Tim

Cold Cold Cold  38 degrees at the start. Total time-1:25:01 Ranked 136/173 men.  Race report is up.

SWIM-400m-11:04 Ranked 146/173 men - Slow, but good. I swam the entire 400m freestyle. Happy I started out with good pace and finished. I had no idea I could do this. This is a real confidence builder for my training.

T1-2:05 Ranked 89/173 men - Good, but some was due to my putting on running shoes after mount line.

BIKE-12 miles-51:06 Ranked 129/173 men - This was a brutal ride. My goal was 16 mph and I didn't come close. Winner was under 21 mph. Hills and wind were a killer.

T2-1:55 Ranked 142/173 men - OK

RUN-2 mile-18:51 Ranked 143/173 men - Felt like I was slow, but I'm actually happy with a 9:26 pace.

I feel good and have scheduled my next sprint tri for June 30th-Summer Roundup in Joplin, MO. It will be a 500m open water swim, 12.3 mile bike and 5k run. I will then have the next sprint 8/18/13 in Claremore, OK.

Congratulations guys! Good work! I had a good day yesterday, PR'd my 2000 meter swim taking over 2 minutes off my time (I'm sure the fact that I had someone in the next lane who was close in speed helped) but I continued swimming to hit 2500 meters in 56min. I followed that with 2miles of speed work on the treadmill & last night I did a PR on my 10k time, almost a minute faster. I was quite surprised by both of these, as I haven't been able to put in as much training time lately, also my legs were still pretty sore from the hills & wind Saturday & the 30 mph wind we rode in on Sunday (only had the wind at our backs for about 1.5 miles). I'm planning to take it a little easy the rest of the week, need to give the legs a rest so I have something "in the tank" for Sunday's Duathlon. Then I'm hoping to hit it hard afterward! Tim

Being a part of this group has been both inspirational & educational, Thank You to everyone! Am I just a freak or does anybody else have trouble sleeping after a big day of training or racing? After my race I needed more seat time so I did a rather difficult 40 mile ride on Sunday afternoon. Sunday night I just couldn't sleep, I tried taking some aleve & a sleeping pill at about midnight but still didn't sleep more than a half hour at a time. This has happened to me before just not quite as bad. HELP Please! Thanks, Tim

tim,

not sure what to tell you on the sleep.   I love the big workouts late and walk in and go to sleep.   I will put it out to my local team and see if anyone else has and issue like that.
