Big congrats Pierce! That's awesome that you completed your first. Sounds like you had a good time considering the weather and cold water. I've got the first race of the season in 2 weeks and I'm not looking forward to putting my face in the cold water either with all the snow we've been getting lately.

Okay team, I need your help.  My coach is telling me I need to engage my hamstrings more while running.  I have to admit I have no clue what I am engaging I just go forward.  She sent me a video clip but it really doesn't explain how to engage or even if you can tell you are engaging them.   The reason why she felt that i need to engage my hamstring is that she saw me doing something funky with my left leg.  I don't think I am doing anything funky with it but she saw it in a video  Any suggestions?

Hey KTC. Can you post the video? To me what "engage the hamstrings" means in running is pulling your heels up. Kind of like "butt kickers". It would cause you to almost leap forward a bit I guess.

I'm not sure what your coach saw obviously but when I think of what you're being told this is what comes to mind.

Congrats Pierce on your first tri!  Sounds like the conditions were terrible but you made it through and that is all that counts.  Regarding "powering through" the hills and wind - how was your cadence?  Cadence is so key to triathlon and being effective off the bike and on the run.  You should work on keeping your cadence around 85-90 and never push to hard.  If you hit some wind, just shift up and keep that cadence consistent.  It will save your legs and your knees for the run.  I don't think you really had any options regarding your transition times with the weather.  Take a look and compare your transition times with other racers to see how you did.

If you wanna see how it is done check out this video I took from my Racine 70.3 last year with Craig Alexander.  I always have the last swim wave there so I get to watch the Pro's come into T1 before I head down for my swim.  Unbelievable how efficient these guys are:

I hate how they do that short Spring session - feels like you just get somewhat going then they start new.  I am in the same boat as KC and have not been around as much as possible but I am up for RFP'ing this group to the next session.

kcgolf - 2013-05-03 12:43 PM

Hey Team. Looks like another session is starting up - who is in? Sorry I have been hit in miss this time around. I don't like to make excuses - I just have a lot of shite going on in my life and I am barely hanging on and doing my best with life, work and triathlons. So because of all that crap - I have not been on here to chat as much as I have in the past and I will try to do better the next go around.

So - long story short -  thanks for the support to date I realy appreciate it. I hope everyone is safe, healthy and happy.

Took a little training Siesta last week for about 4 days.  i just got a little overwhelmed with work, landscape honey do list, converting my workshop into a home gym, etc...  Kind of felt guilty but now glad I took a break and feel well rested.  Had a great outdoor (cold 49 degrees) one hour bike ride this morning.  average 19 mph and also average 256 watts (238 is my FTP).  Getting ready for the Galena Triathlon next weekend.  Curious to see how all this killing myself in the basement with Trainer Road workouts all winter will pan out.  I have a feeling my race day weather is going to be similar to Pierces from last weekend.

Hello guys!

I feel like I have fallen of a cliff. Life and work are taking over. I went 7 days without any type of physical activity. Not good. Tomorrow is another day and I will have to pick up where I left off. The good thing is that I did start an endurance kickboxing class today so that I can force myself to work on my core. Hope it helps.

Pierce - great job on your Tri. Sounds like you had a lot of fun.

Tim - I also feel like spring snuck up on me. The weather has been great and I haven't been able to take advantage of it.

Pierce - congrats on your triathlon especially toughing out the bad conditions. Well IMOZ was AWESOME!!! I got to catch the athletes and hand out the towels before escorting them to the recovery area. It was great hearing all their different stories it was so inspiring!!! I'm definitely pumped for next year that is if I get in. They still have not announced the sign up date for 2014. If you look at my Facebook page I posted a video of the countdown to midnight whilst standing under the finish line. That was pretty cool. Just hope I make it back in before then next year! We are heading home on Friday thankfully. It's been hard getting into any sort of training regime and my diet has been woeful. I've just written it off as a 10 day holiday. I'm keen as ever to start knocking out the mms again !!

Hey Team.

Just checking in. Pierce - way to go you should be proud you did great.

Been busy with work, selling a house, buying a house, IT band rehab with knee and hip strengthening program put together by my chiropractor. It is hard work but I am trying. I am getting a good portion of my training in - so fingers crossed, I will get healthy and be ok for the season.

I just figured (hoped) that we would continue with our group.  Not that I don't want anymore new people I do, but it does seem like life has hit all of us and we are just know settling in.  Tim you are a great mentor and we would love for to continue for another  session.

Thanks Pierce.  I asked my coach for clarification and she pretty much said the same thing as you did.  Butt Kicks, or high knees.  I will be focusing on these when I have to run in HR Z 2.  Running in Z2 is hard as I just want to go so focusing on form will help me slow my pace down.

KC - how is your swimming going?  Have your found that the techniques TI taught you are helping you to increase your swim?  All that I can remember is that their focus was more on the entry and rotation.  Hope you find relief in your IT pains.

I'm in for another session and promise to be more active.

Getting an MRI on my left knee tomorrow.  Got 3 x-rays yesterday so I am hoping they didn't see something on them that caused this very urgent MRI.  Still cycling and swimming (with a pull buoy-can't kick), not much running because I pay dearly for it when I choose to run.

The new "used" Trek bike went back because it would not fit.  The shop gave us full credit towards a new bike for my hubby.  The Guru DFU fitting showed that I cannot fit on any stock bike without significant compromise.  I had no idea how much a custom bike cost and darn near fainted when they gave me the price.  The new bike situation is now in a holding pattern.  I will take the fit coordinates to the LBS and let them see what they can do.  If anyone has any advice or suggestions I am all ears!

Congrats Pierce, way to tough out those rough conditions!

I hope everyone is doing well and having a lot of fun training!

G'day Team,

I hope everyone is getting in some good sessions.

Lori - sorry to hear about the Trek not working out for you, I hope you manage to find something to suit real soon.

Tim - it would be awesome to have you as our mentor again. I have learned so much from you and I'm going to need your help and support to get me through my first Ironman! Plus I still have a heap of Aussie-isms to teach you! Laughing

Well I am home finally, and though it was a great trip, it was more of a holiday than anything and I only got one run in. It's a long story but basically we had no access to a kitchen so I lived off crap and restaurant food for 10 days. I am so tired from lack of sleep and all the driving, that I am spending today just chillaxing so I can reset my body clock. By the end of the week I hope to be back on track with training and nutrition.

I am hanging out for Thursday's sign up for IMOZ and will be on tenderhooks until I get in, I hope I get in!! I was a bit peeved at not being given priority entry when I was a volunteer but they do things differently over here than in the states. If I don't make it, I am thinking of trying IM Western Australia which wont be until December 2014. Anyway I will let you know if I get in or not.

Hey Team.

Good Luck Simone - we are all pulling for you to get in.

Weather has turned for the worse this weekend. I have a 5 hour bike to do tomorrow and it is going down to the high 30's, low 40's tonight with winds tomorrow in the mid to high teens. As much as I hate to say it, I may had to load that shiv on the trainer again - for the last friken time I hope.

All the best team.

Hello Team,

It will be great if we could continue with this group. I have learned a lot from this group. Although I am struggling getting in some good training, I still want to learn from everyone. I don't have much to contribute right now but I hope that in the future I can give some advice to others.

Tim - I was not able to register for Galena. I got caught up with work and tried to sign up to late. This never happens to me. Disappointed but I have put in a lot of work for this Galena Tri. Now I'll have to find me another race which should not be a problem. Best of luck!

Lori - don't get discourage on the bike search.  When I was looking for a new bike last year I thought I knew what I wanted, then I had a Rutul bike fitting this took all my measurements, what felt comfortable and entered the data into the system and it spitted out what bikes would fit me the best.  I was surprised that the 2 bikes I was looking at were not on the list.  So back to the drawing board I went, I was discourage but I also was happy that I spent the money on this fitting to make sure I got a bike that would fit me good.  Take your time to find that perfect bike.

Simone, you know we are all pulling for you.

Good Morning Team.

Still moving forward - crazy busy with life, work blah blah blah.

Training is going just ok - IT band still up in the air - another visit with my chiro on Wednesday.

Tim - do you race this weekend?

Sure hope we put another group together because I have so many issues I am afraid another one won't accept me and my red spandex bike shorts or my red speedo

I would love continue with this group too. I know I've been a little absent lately but it just seems like I'm more busy this spring than last. Don't know why. I really do love reading about everyone's workouts and accomplishments! And on that note...I've got my first race of the season this Saturday. It's just a sprint but it's exciting to be able to get in race mode again and work on transitions. Happy Training to everyone!

Hey Team,

Got some good news, I am officially signed up for Ironman Australia 2014! I am so excited!

I hope everyone is having a good week.

Tim - how did Galena tri go?

WTB - Good luck with your race this weekend, I know you will kick butt!

Is anyone else racing? Or has races coming up? My next one is a half marathon on the 21st July, started my 10 week running program for it this week. I'm already up to a 12 km long run, so I'm kinda half way there already.
