happyscientist - 2013-03-03 7:26 AMJust a note on something I discovered.  I have never swam with a cap, but I noticed that races require you to wear one, so I bought one to get used to it.  That tiny piece of silicone makes a difference in how my head is positioned in the water.  It also took a couple swims just to get used to the feel of the cap itself.  Definitely do a couple practice swims with a cap if you have never worn one.
I find them too hot to wear in the pool. But then again I'm always brushing my bangs outta my eyes. I was thinking of starting to wear one in the pool for that reason.

b2run - 2013-03-02 4:00 PMI need swim help.  I've been swimming two nights a week for 4 months using a dvd and youtube to help my technique.  I feel like I've improved greatly on technique but my times get no faster.  I try to do a 50 m and a 100 m swim towards the end of my swim each day to check times.  I don't get it.  Is there a point where things suddenly click?  Should I just accept that I wasn't meant to be a fast swimmer?
Things will click....it may take longer than you'd like it too though. It took me a year of swimming for things to click. And I'm still working on perfecting my technique. I don't think you ever stop

Guys, I'm in Quebec for the week. My husband is riding a skeleton luge sled down a mountain in Iceland this summer, so we are here for some training. Le Massif is the only mountain we found that allows for this on nice trails. So starting tomorrow we are training every day. They look like long days too. But first.... We are heading to the ice hotel for a "warm and cozy" sleep. The ice hotel is kept at a balmy 27FI'm gonna try to get some runs in but I have a feeling I'm gonna be fried by the end of the day

I think my swimming form is improving because my times are gradually getting faster.  Even last night when I took a while to warmup and felt like I was struggling, I was faster than average.

I cut open my knickle last week and had to get stitches.  Frustrating to miss out on biking and swimming.  I only had to miss one run.

Rotten luck.

Only two feet of snow left here.  Got a little more today but it's losing its staying power.  How's things out west?

I'm back from my vacation.  Its funny, I had planned a very active vacation but when I started relaxing...I couldn't stop.  I just felt exhausted!  So I went with it! I did some hiking and a little snowboarding.   My run shoes sat in the corner all week

Today I am up early but thats coz I gotta go to work early.  Hopefully tomorrow I will get up earlier and get a ride in.  Starting hot yoga this week too!

How's everyone's training going?  ITs too quiet over here!  Lets make some noise!

Been doing some one legged cycling on my trainer.  It seems to have made a difference in my technique.  Still no significant progress in swimming.

OMG I hate one legged drills....but you are right, they do make a difference!  Teaches you how to have a more fluid pedal stroke without the stall at the top of the stroke!

Even the best laid plans get all f**ked up!  Dept of Public Health is in my nursing facility this week.   Which means I need to be at work early and I can't leave at then end of the day until they do!.  Which means....looooong days, which means......I don't get to work out....which means......I'm probably gonna get grumpy!  Hopefully I get start back up with training on Saturday.

I hear you.  If I don't get enough exercise, I get grumpy.  There have been times when my husband has basically kicked me out of the house to exercise because I have gotten so cranky.

Last September, I injured my Achilles tendon.  After failing to rehab it on my own, I went to my GP, who sent me to an orthopededist who specializes in sports injuries.  He sent me to a PT who is a runner.  I have been released to ease back in and have been nervous that I would reinjure myself.  Last night, I set my watch for quarter mile intervals and alternated running and walking.  It was the first time in months that I have run a mile.  It felt great and I am pain free!

So I registered for this

I signed up for 10 swimming lessons at a pool in town.  They start next week.  Hopefully they'll help my lousy swim times.

Injured Achilles is something I know a lot about....unfortunately.  I ran 3 miles on the beach and injured both my first year.  After 1.5 years of pain off and on I had to hire a run coach who helped me with my form.   I went snowboarding for the 1st time in 13 years in Quebec and there are muscles in my calf that STILL hurt.   I start running again this week.

I have run twice now and have had the same experience both times.  The AT feels fine on the run and that night, but it hurts the next day.  The day after that, everything feels good again.  I am not sure what that means.  The ortho and the PT both said to listen to my body when it comes to how much I run, but my body is sending me mixed signals.

Do you warm up the AT before running?  How about stretching and icing it down after?

I warm up with a half-mile walk.  I also cool down with a walk and stretch afterwards.  I am a little gun shy after it taking so long to heal, so I can't tell if the problem is the AT, or something in the periphery.

Seek out someone that can do ART (Active Release Therapy)  sometimes an injury can occur then scar tissue builds up thus giving you problems as well.  ART targets any scar tissue to break it up.  I warn you though it can be painful!  But well worth it!

I did the run/walk thing last night (it is so hard to stop running when the watch beeps!) and am pain-free today.  This is good.  I just can't let myself get carried away.

YAY for pain free.  The walk/run thing WILL pay off, just keep at it!

I've been at the swim classes for two weeks now.  I believe that they've helped although I haven't timed myself to see if my speed has picked up.  I feel like at least I know what I need to work on.  The trouble is to think of all the things at once.  I feel like when I try and correct one thing, something else starts getting sloppy.  Is it better to do an exercise that just focuses on one thing or just swim lots and try to swim correctly?
