I don't eat sweets everyday, but I noticed even using honey awakens my sweet-tooth.  This month, I want to cut out all sweets/sweeteners.  No sugar or sweets for the month of January!!!  This includes sugar, stevia, honey, agave, other fake sweeteners....etc....I know if I trigger that sweet sensation it can push me over the edge of craving more.  Anyone want in on this???  EXCEPTION is during longer training!

We can do it, fruit juice (from the fruit source, not a jug) is a good natural sweetner

I'd like to join you.  Sugar really is a problem for me.  I did a whole 30 in Aug and gave up all sweeteners.  It was tough but I did it.  I've been ridiculous lately.  This may be just the motivation that I need.

Now to hide/discard the candy in my desk at work.Embarassed

I'll join you as well.  I gave up sweets (and fried) last year and lost over 40 lbs.  Over the holidays, I've noticed that if I even have one little bite, it makes me think more little bites are ok.  So, I've chunked on about 7 lbs.  Sugar is out.  If I needs something sweet, I'll have a piece of fruit

Step away from the candy....or just throw it away!

Day 2, unsweetened....we can do this!  Usually the first few days are the worst and then it gets easier.

I'm in!

I decided to go completely sugar and grain free this month - so it will help having people going through the sugar thing too. I document it daily on my blog if anyone is bored enough: http://superstevostraining.wordpress.com/

Its going pretty well. I've had some fruit to get by. Pear, 2 clementines and some cider watered down with seltzer. I'll work to reduce that as the month goes on.

I'm in. My situation got pretty dire, reaining weight, not going to my OA meetings, then I finally bought into the reality of my justifying my addiction with endurance training. I am off sugar and grains entirely. I'm going fully ketogenic which will be a long process, but the heck with my whole story, I'm sugar free for January, so I am in!

Claaw, I read your last few blog posts.  Best wishes on your ongoing quest.

I am not going keto, but I did do a Whole30 in August.  That involved no sweeteners, no grains (including corn and rice), no white potatoes, no dairy, no legumes.  I increased my fat intake (coconut, avocado, home made olive oil mayo) to make up for the lack of carbs and found that it helped keep me full.  Also, and I understand that this is counter to your keto goal, I found that I felt better with some starchy "veggies" such as sweet potato, butternut squash, spaghetti squash, carrots, etc.  I found days 7 to 14 or so to be the "worst".  My muscles ached and were very tired.  Going up the stairs during that period exhausted my legs.

I'm currently aiming for a "Primal" diet.  Meat, fish, veggies, some fruit, occasional nuts, full fat dairy, healthy fats...

Last night was tough.  I so so so wanted just a little something sweet before bed.  So I grabbed up the Kindle and RAN to the bed.  Once I'm in, I'm not getting out, so I was safe.

Good luck today everyone!!!

eat whole eggs in the morning and you won't be so hungry for those cookies.

I have an acorn squash ready for some night this week, and will be going for spaghetti squash when I get a real pasta craving. So far so good. I have had three apples in 6 days, which is the only thing I am tracking. I am definitely letting go of a lot of water right now, to the tune of about 8-10 pounds in a week.

Class is an intense 90 minutes at 6:30AM, so can't usually east more than a banana before class.  Usually have a gel during class, but those are all full of sugars  Eggs after class

i get it. But the banana is asugar too. Very high Glucose spike. No fiber, which is why bananas bind up most peope. No wonder you're famished after the workout. You're starting the day with a simple carb, then following up an intense workout with a simple carb. Sure a banana beats a gel, but you're setting yourself for a very carb heavy train that can crash hard. That is quite early and challenging, but if you to go no sugar for a month, I think you'll ne happier gtting some protein and quality fat early as you can. Eggs after sounds good.

Nope today I did the workout in a fasted state.  IF I have time, I will eat a banana before class, but not always.  Can't eat protein before class, does not sit well with my digestive issues combined with the intensity of the workout.  I don't have an iron stomach despite 7 Ironman finishes, lol.  So for me it's a balance of what I can/can't eat before/during training, without setting off a world of tummy issues.

When I started the thread, I never said I was not eating fruit.  For those that want to give up fruit sugar, that's fine, but for me it's a month without added sugars/sweeteners/honey.

Another good day for me. Work was a bit stressful, but I did not reach for any sweets.

I like eggs for breakfast but they are not always convenient and usually need to be warmed. I do have some hard boiled on hand, but I usually save those for when I want a snack or for egg salad. On workdays I tend to have plain full fat or 2% greek yogurt with fruit mixed in. Its pretty filling to me.

Today was good . . . had an awesome swim on a 100% fat breakfast. As the day went on though, the day two headache hit hard. I attribute it more to no grain than no sugar. Hopefully it will fade by day 4 or so.

Great job everyone - keep it up.

Abbie I realize how that last couple of posts from me come off like some newbie who read an article and is now doling out his own self-proclaimed expert advice. I feel kind of like a dope after I re-read that.

And I know you didn't say you were going off all fruit. Didn't mean to imply you had, or that I was adding a "you should."

I'm all about this thread to help each other in whatever sugar-free goals we have.

On a completely different note, I was at a natural food store looking for some specific things, and came across cocoa nibs. That's the unprocessed bean itself. (I have been through the chocolate world ride at hershey so many times, I could recite the whole process.) Anyway, I wanted to see just what it was like without added sugar or milk. No surprise here: bitter. As bitter as DanielG's posts about his divorce.

Lol no worries at all! As a trainer I've read a ton about different nutrition options. As an endurnace athlete and one with digestive issues it's "interesting" to see what works "scientifically" an in reality for me personally. As Cocoa there's a reason Hershey processes it so much to taste sweet . Happy Friday an welcome to day 4 unsweetened!

For breakfast I had bulletproof coffee. It was made up of calories derived 100% from fat.

Sounds very odd . . . but the energy it gives is pretty good.
