Anyone else doing Wildflower? If you've done it before give details please! I've always wanted to do it, just a little nervous of the bike!

Did it last year and will be back this year. Bike part is not bad, 2 cat 5 and 1cat 3. However, the heat during avery hilly run was a major PITA last year. It slowed me down by almost a 1:20 a mile. First time i failed to finish a HIM under 6 hrs. So i would say - do your bricks with hills, esp for the run.

BAck this year likely for the third time.   People talk about the bike.  It's actually not that hard.  A little work getting out of the park, then some rollers, then the majority of the "backside" is actually a net downhill.  THen of course there's Nasty Grade.  But just save your legs for it and you'll be fine.  The hardest part for me is always the last 6 miles or so after the big downhill.

Now the run, don't want to scare you on that, but it's nasty, brutal and hellish.  But a heck of a lot of fun

I'm in. It's my first time. Super excited for it. We'll be camping Fri to Sun. Any tips on the logistics/camping from veterans would be much appreciated.

I'm signed up for my first (and probably only) time doing WF but I live in TX (ie flat) so the hills have me nervous. I current have a 12:25 cassette, do I need to get a 11:28? Looking for recommendations before making the purchase. Thanks!

I would say it depends on your ability! I've never done Wildflower because I've always been a little nervous of the hills. I'm a big guy though and will most likely be running a 12-28!

Signed up for long course.  I've used a 12-27 the 2X i've done it, but I weighed 230+ pounds back then.  Now that I am 40 pounds lighter, I am going even smaller and using a compact and 11-28

Not camping this year, staying in Paso and driving in

Goal is sub 6

Atak Kat - 2013-01-05 9:44 AM Who's doing WF-squared? Or has done it?

I'm signed up for both. This will be my first year to do both. I know a few people that've done it in the past. This is my 3rd Wildflower. Very challenging race.

I've done a double last year also - Silicon Valley LC + Olympic.

If you prepay your camping it saves a few bucks....I've camped Fri - Sun three times and Thurs-Sun once, things start filling up late afternoon Friday but you can always find a spot.  Aside from a selected number of 'reserved' sites, you can pretty much drop your tent on any piece of ground you can find.  You'll have plenty of company wherever you are...it's a great atmosphere.  I generally pass on the pasta dinner and cook myself.  I'm also a huge believer in ear plugs for the night before my race!  Hope you enjoy the weekend, it's definitely on my 'don't miss' list every year.

Ok, finished California 70.3 yesterday, now 5 weeks until Wildflower.  While running the 13.1 miles of yesterday's race, I was having a difficult time due to an injury.   I saw a competitior wearing a "Wildflower" shirt.   I started MF'ing myself on why I was going to do it.  Anyways, I promise to be ready.  So hope everyone is training and doing some hills!!

A question about the camping: a buddy and I that are doing the race are arriving on Thursday (trying to leave Sunday) and are tent camping. Are there any recommendations on which camp sites to try to get into to? I've read that Lynch is all pro/sponsors. Does Redonda fill up? Is is better to be in Lupine?

Any guidance/advice is appreciated.

Thanks,

Thanks,

We usually stay in Redondo Vista.  There are usually several spots of flat ground to drop a tent and it's reasonably convenient to get down to the lake where transition, check-in and all the vendors are located.  If you arrive Thursday, it shouldn't be very crowded yet so you can drive thru and see what your options are.  Redonda does get full, but usually not until later Friday evening from what I've seen.  The further you go from Lynch hill the lighter the crowds seem to get, but you'll also have to make that trek back to get to registration and transtion areas.

Just switched to the Oly.   Friend I am going with isn't trained up, I have a minor post Oceanside injury that I don't want to aggravate with upping training and racing, saving it for IM Canada

Any advice on the brand of the chain lube that'd work best on that course? It'll be fairly sandy, and warm/dry.

It was more like damn hot and very windy - at least on Saturday. On Sunday, the weather  was much more merciful.
