Subject: new cassette - must get new chain?

I'm seriously thinking about getting a new cassette. Same number of gears, but need some easier gears for the hills. My current casssette/chain only have ~811 road miles + ~220 trainer miles. I doubt I'd be switching back and forth between cassettes, I only plan to use the new one from now on.

Do I need to get a new chain too??

thanks!

Probably not. But if you notice a lot of skipping when you install the new cassette, go ahead and replace it. But see how the new one works by itself first.

1000 miles on it? You should be fine.

Chains are cheaper than cassettes. Running new cassettes with old (stretched) chains will trash your cassettes prematurely. So you should replace the chain relatively frequently. (You can measure the links to determine if they need replaced.) If you're replacing a worn out cassette you most likely want a new chain.

Check out this site to determine chain wear.
