Subject: when do you wear your aero helmet?
I am toying with the idea of buying an aero helmet as 1) I know that they offer a huge time savings, 2)  I have no other triathlon needs (and have some $ burning a hole in my pocket).  One of the things that has kept me from this purchase in the past is that they look so d@mn stupid.  My question is, do you guys ever wear yours other than at races?

take it out for a test run of course, nothing new on race day.  Other than that I only wear it when I'm driving.  Stick my head through the sunroof to get some better fuel economy.

As others have said only in races or for a good photo opportunity i.e. riding the trainer in the basement

I don't remember who it was, but as they were buying an aero helmet, the clerk at the store said they shouldn't use it outside because the lack of vents would make them really hot.  They should only use it for indoor triathlons.

So, I will respond to the OP by saying "if I had an Aero Helmet, I'd wear it to spin class..."

Decent bang for the buck.  But they don't offer HUGE time savings.  Not sure how much, but something like 60 seconds in a 40k TT.  Don't expect to be a couple MPH faster.

If I wear it, it's only at races.  I don't use it in HIM or longer either.  I have a slightly older model that works best in earo position and has limited ventilation.  I give up some earo advantage in the long races for comfort.

For the most part only in races (triathlons and TT's).

I do wear it once or twice on a short, hard training ride before a race so I am used to having a different helmet on (since it is hotter and covers my ears).

I don't think there is a HUGE time savings from wearing one, even less if you don't hold your head in an optimal position, which I never do, but an Aero helmet is definitely considered the best bang for your buck in terms of performance gains per $ spent.

LOL, that's funny.  I read some study on this site about "how aero is aero" then the following week there was a smokin' hot deal on the Gyro Advantage 2 helmet (I think that's the one I got) for something like $70-75 so I could not resist.  So now at group rides where I'm the new guy or when a lot of guys are there I've never seen before I ride up to them wearing it, say "how's it going", see their reaction, hopefully one of them actually says something out load, then laugh ride back to my car and get out my regular helmet.  If it's a short ride, like 20 miles sometimes I'll have my aero bottle between the bars and two large 24 Oz water bottles plus another bottle in the back of my shirt.  Then I'll ask, do you think I have enough water?.....

I use a Rudy Project Syton which is a smaller aero helmet for all my training.  It is comfortable and fits me well so I figure why not.  I also have a RP Wingspan which I think looks like some kind of gladiator helmet so strickly for races.

While biking.  I leave it in transition during the swim and the run.

wear it once or twice to practice just to get used to the weight and what not. then wear it on race day. depending on your expected time, for a HIM or IM, comfort might beget speed and go with the road helmet.

and if you are racing in the male 30-34 AG this year, NEVER wear it. same with race wheels, leave em at home. Tongue out

In addition to putting a stop to the whole aero helmet thing, my fiancee also insisted that I stop calling it "friday night team time trials."  Really, she's no fun at all.

I saw on a thread somewhere around here, that you can burn up to 50 calories less per hour when wearing an aero helmet - which if true, would seem to be a pretty significant benefit on a long course - greater than the speed benefit IMO.

I've been looking at getting one also, and will definitely wear it on at least one century ride before my first Ironman - I quit worrying about looking like a geek long ago and want to be sure there are no issues with wearing it for that distance.

You dont' wear it during the swim?  It's hydrodynamic as well as aerodynamic, you know...

If you're doing long course I would go for it, if short course why not try out the newer short-tailed helmets like the Rudy Project Wingspan, or Giro AirAttack so you can use it all the time?

Like someone said above....nothing new on race day.   Usually break it out once or twice in front of the race and then on race day.

Additionally, I take my regular helment on raceday as well, so I can throw it my nearest competition*

Did it make you faster in the bedroom too?  I'm always looking for extra minutes for training time.

I would wear it in bed if my partner was willing.

You don't think the spandex is goofy enough? Tri's and time trials only.
