I saw on a thread somewhere around here, that you can burn up to 50 calories less per hour when wearing an aero helmet - which if true, would seem to be a pretty significant benefit on a long course - greater than the speed benefit IMO.

I've been looking at getting one also, and will definitely wear it on at least one century ride before my first Ironman - I quit worrying about looking like a geek long ago and want to be sure there are no issues with wearing it for that distance.

That would be pretty tough to quantify and very situational. Last Ironman I did with an aero helmet I absolutely cooked my brain. Maybe a cool weather race would offer that benefit though.

Oysterboy - 2013-01-03 1:35 PM I am toying with the idea of buying an aero helmet as 1) I know that they offer a huge time savings, 2)  I have no other triathlon needs (and have some $ burning a hole in my pocket).  One of the things that has kept me from this purchase in the past is that they look so d@mn stupid.  My question is, do you guys ever wear yours other than at races?

That's the problem with Aero helmets.  a $100 (on sale) aero helmet offers a similar time savings as a $200 set of aero wheels.  But wheels look cool and you can use them for every ride.  The helmet, sadly, only gets used for race day.  Geeky any other time.

pga_mike - 2013-01-03 3:57 PM Races and Friday Night team time trials.

In addition to putting a stop to the whole aero helmet thing, my fiancee also insisted that I stop calling it "friday night team time trials."  Really, she's no fun at all.

Always love a good Friday laugh.

Work, court, son's soccer games, local sprints where I can save 1.5 seconds on bike, mall, turn around for angry bird beak costume at halloween, Disney Marathon for better aero profile on run, and finally, on the golf course where new technology is always welcome.

Race day.  I didn't wear it once playing texas-hold them game, but it was house party and the beer was plentiful.  (I won also..

coolgenes - 2013-01-04 10:21 AM If you're doing long course I would go for it, if short course why not try out the newer short-tailed helmets like the Rudy Project Wingspan, or Giro AirAttack so you can use it all the time?

if i got the air attack i would be tempted to wear it all the damn time.  im in the market for an aero helmet, just not sure what helmet i am going to pick up.  the new scott split matches my bike perfectly... but the air attack has less chance of wrenching my neck around in the event of a wipe out.

Speaking of the AirAttack, has anyone heard when it will be released?

Only on race day. On a good day only on the bike, on a bad race day on the bike and run (and those are the days I need a helmet for everything I do).

I ride it on the OCCASIONAL time trial training ride  usually only once or twice in a season.

Of course I wear it in races, including the weekly time trials we have going here too :D
