I just had to get my rear derailleur replaced. I have been having shifting problems and a "droopy" chain. I'm glad I figured this out before the race. My only fear is getting flat. I'm pretty much done if I get one. I have tubulars that I just got this Spring. And really can't practice changing a flat since they are glued on. What are the chances of getting glass or thorn on this course?

I would say the chances are pretty low. A lot of us have ridden the course and no one has mentioned anything. Warren rides it basically every weekend, so he would know best.

I have never had a flat on the course, and like Paul said I ride the course, or at least parts of it, almost every weekend from May thru Oct. In the past they have also swept a lot of the course prior to the weekend, so even the sandy patches are less prevalent on race day.

The pro race should be unreal. I'm not sure if they will all show up, but Joe Gambles, Andy Potts, Terenzo Bozzone, and Leon Griffin (second to Gambles last year) are all signed up.

If you've never seen top pros up close, it's cool checking out their bikes in transition and it's a rush seeing them coming back on the bike and run loops. They are human missiles.

Psyched about meeting Andy Potts on Saturday at a meet & greet.

The guys schedule is insane the rest of the year. Every 3 weeks or so is either a half or full IM, through to IMAZ. He must just collapse the month of December.

Looking forward to the weekend. Should be @ Gunstock about 11:15 or so to get #, etc. Hope to be at bike check in right at 2 PM. Also will take a drive along the bike course to get an idea of what to expect

WTC race newbie here with a question --

is there a traditional transition set up for this race, or will all my bike stuff need to be in a bag, as well as separate bag for run stuff? Is there anything left @ the bike except post swim stuff? How does this all work? Never done this type of transition in a race before.

Everything is in one, small space for you. During the swim your bike is there with your helmet, gloves, glasses, foods, etc usually on it and your towel next to it which has your bike shoes, running shoes, socks, etc. I bring everything in one backpack.
It is not like a full IM where you have a bunch of different bags for different things. Think of the traditional triathlon experience for 70.3's

OK, good. The usual 'jam all your stuff by your front wheel' set up . Thanks! I was thinking it was going to an IM like thing w/ separate bike & run bags, etc.

Major BC - thanks for this reply. I was reading the Timberman info packet and there was this talk of different bags for things. What you're describing is the same as the sprint and Oly races I've done. This is my first 70.3 and that last thing I need is another variable!

Meanwhile, the forecast is looking great. Let's hope this pattern holds.

I read the same thing, hence my question. Glad I'm not losing my mind

I think you guys are reffering to the morning clothes bag? This is just an option to remove your morning clothes (what you wear to the race) from your transition area. You get the bag back after the race next to the transition area so they are just holding onto your valuables any clothes while you race. I dont use it but if its really cold or something that morning where I have too much for my space in transition, maybe I will.

I think they might be referring to this also...

Page 11 in the Bike Section...

7. Helmets, bike shoes, and other cycling
gear must be placed in the provided Bike
Gear Bag.

Aw crud.

Fewer variables = better, at least for me (enough new stuff with a first time HIM).

Admittedly I haven't read the athletes guide for a couple years, but I've done Timberman 4 or 5 times and never had to use a bike gear bag. I would be surprised if we have to put our stuff in a bag. Besides trying to cut back the amount of "stuff" people bring into transition, there reallly isn't a good reason to do this.

On a side note, but really important..... Make sure your helmet has the proper safety sticker and it hasnt fallen off. (I believe it is called CPSC sticker) I raced Eagleman back in June and the refs were going around checking helmets randomly. A couple athlete's stickers had fallen off their helmets and they couldn't use the helmet. I don't mean to add more stress, but it would really suck to show up and have that hassle on race morning.

This might be just the motivation I need to finally get an aero helmet! Currently debating between Bell Javelin and Giro Advantage 2.

I just checked my helmet and it's also pretty old, so no sticker is visible. I guess I can run to Fast Splits at lunch today and get something new. I don't want to take any chances as this point!

Again not trying to cause a panic, but really want everyone here to be aware. Below is the related thread from Slowtwitch.

I am by no means saying that this is going to happen at Timberman, but probably a good idea to make sure you have the sticker.

Aaaahhhh!  There's going to be a run on aero helmets at FS today!  Wish I had my helmet with me at work (I often wear it around the office - it's very cool looking, right?) so I could check.  Worst case, I'll bring my road helmet if there's no sticker and I can't find one - just glad to know that I should check for a sticker!

Many thanks for the heads up!!  Even if they don't check, it's a good thing to put on my pre-race list (still getting the hang of it).

I was just reading on the FAQ page of the Timberman website that there will be "live online tracking" of athletes during the race. Does anyone know anything about this? Can my kids track my progress on a laptop? Is it by bib number? Thoughts welcome.

The live tracking is a bit misleading. There are a couple check points during the race and its updated on the website. Its pretty far behind real time though. I think it is around mile 28 on the bike and 3 different locations on the run.

happy to report my helmet has plenty of stickers on it, so I should be good

Yes, the 'tracking' is various split times via Ironman.com, I believe.
