I ran the Harbison 50k Saturday, it has about 4000' of elevation change and mostly technical single track with lots of rocks and roots. Had 1 gravity check that tore the whole top of my shoe open. I had a blast, finished in 5:49, faster than anticipated.

The last 5mi were the hardest part of the course and I really felt it, but I kept going. During that last 5 I tried to imagine doing another 19 to complete a 50mi and I'm not sure I could have. Is that a normal feeling or do I still have a lot to learn?
I felt great both mentally and physically but my right hip flexor was tired and giving me a hard time going up hill around mi 27.

*I should note that I started running about 2yrs ago, I have always been athletic but as far as running regular for a measurable distance.

I have done a 50k solo/unsupported while training for a 50 mile. Equal gain for the milage. I found that when I went to do my long runs in training, whatever distance it was 25, 27, 31 etc, the last 3-5 miles were tough and I was scared I'd get to the 50 miler and feel that 'toughness' at mile 31 since that was the longest to date that I had ever run. Nope. At mile 47 is when it got really tough.

The only reason I figured is that once you hit those last 3-5 miles the end is in sight. And the end means being done, food, dry cloths, shower, rest, beer etc. So those last 3-5 miles had the 'itching to be done' qualities to them.

And time wise, the 50k was 5:23 beautiful sunny and dry trail. My 50 mile was 10:50 in a massive storm, mud slides, flooded trails etc.

Go for it. Train smart, put in the long runs and my guess is the last 5 will always be tough!
