Subject: Newbie Looking for a Bike

I do not know the first thing about bikes but I do know that I have registered for my first triathalon and something tells me...I'm gonna need a bike.  :-)

I'm looking for the best bang for my buck.  I've been told to get a road bike.  Any particular brand that you may reccomend or any tips you may be able to offer would be greately appreciated.

Thanks

Subject: RE: Newbie Looking for a Bike

Considerations we need to know first:

  • budget
  • current fitness level
  • have you ever ridden a road bike before?
  • any medical issues (spine/neck issues, etc)
  • do you plan to ride in groups during training?
  • do you want a bike with the main point being to do triathlon, or do you want one you can ride for general fitness/riding?

Decisions you'll need to make:

  • time trial, road, or cruiser/mountain frame
  • component (shifting, braking, and wheels) spec you want
  • frame material you want (carbon, aluminum, steel, titanium).

All of the major manufacturers put out good frames.  You'll want to base your decision on budget, fit, and how you plan to ride.  Answer some of the questions above and folks here can steer you in the right direction.
