That was my biggest hesitation. I figured I could keep myself somewhat safe, but was just uneasy about how much water was still on the pavement with everyone else riding around yada yada yada... insert more excuses here.

In retrospect I could have gone later in the time trail for more time to let the pavement dry out, but I just wasn't interested in taking a chance.

Good work. Hopefully the rest of the season stays dry.

The roads were fine. I've ridden on wet roads before and while looking at X-rays of my broken collar bone last year after a wet road related bike crash, I am very conservative these days. The course is very non-technical with very few sharp turns, other than the turnaround. In the first few miles I was slightly tentative, mainly the rollers as you're heading out of the park. After that things dried up a bit and having straight runs with only gradual inclines made it easy to ride at planned race pace.

I stayed upright until I was out of the park, but once on the highway, I was in aero most of the time. I thought the roads dried out pretty quickly. It was a fun ride. Cross winds, as always, were a challenge (for me), but I'm starting to love riding in the wind. I kind of have to around here. :-)

I probably took a few of the rollers at the start of the race too fast because there was some standing water, but the particular amount of traffic at the time made it easy to avoid the puddles. Other than that, everything was fine except for one gust of wind about 2/3 of the way down the back side of the dam. You know, the one we talked about while waiting in the rain? Yep, it was there as expected, but manageable. The roads were nearly dry by the end of the bike where the sun was hitting it.

Haven't ridden this course so how are the hills compared to SM Park. I'm considering doing Lawrence Tri depending on the details.

If you're going to do the Lawrence tri it might be the same course as the Midwest Mayhem, at least part of it. No hills to speak if there, easier than the 5150 from what I remember. There's sort of a longish climb as you get to the sprint turnaround but that was the hardest part. SM Park is hilly but short hills. Nothing like the "dam" hill at lone star except that little short hill on the run after T2, that's like a mini "dam" hill and if you overcook the bike you'll want to walk up that one.

I think there were some decent hills from my recollections of the Mayhem course. It has half of that nasty road from IM 70.3 KS and if you ride the short course, you got to turn around and head straight up with no momentum.

Between that and SMP, it's kind of a toss up.

Here's a course preview from the Mayhem - http://www.examiner.com/article/midwest-mayhem-triathlon-bike-and-r...

The course may be different all together, but who knows until the announce it all.

I like SMP since it's 10 minutes from my house and it's all contained in the park and closed to traffic.

Since there was no mention of 5150 in that announcement, can we assume this will be another competing triathlon match where everyone loses in the end?

Probably, and I was planning on KS 5150, if it still exists. The price of the KC tri is to low to pass up, unless the 5150 matches it, or if they can do it the week or two before.

I was planning on Kansas 5150 as a prep for IMKS (although I don't know why...), but if there are no announcements for the race prior to 1/1, I'll probably sign up for KC. Is the $20 discount for people registered last year, or open to anyone?

Did kc tri ever refund everybody last time or do anything?

I raced the 5150...and even if its costs more, I'd do it again based on how last year shook out...

KC Tri did not refund anything. But, it was even better. Those that registered go added to the elite lighting league with promises of benefits all throughout the year. I have to say, it's been pretty awesome so far being a part of this elite club.

Now, out of curiosity, when did you get that e-mail about the 2014 KC? I did not receive it which suprises me considering my lighting league elite status. Hmmm.

Should we even count on the 5150 series coming back? Based on comments by Andrew Messick in the past about the series and with Providence looking to maybe sell WTC in the near future I wonder if it'll be around next year.

BTW, is there any expiration on that discount code?

They did send out an e-mail over the weekend with an offer for a free hooded sweatshirt for all 2013 athletes.

Not exactly the best looking sweatshirt, logo wise, but I'll still take it.

I missed the email too, and as a fellow Lightning Leaguer I am just a little disappointed. I might need to check that Spam file.I am sure that is where all of the other Lightning League communications landed.

Call me fair weather... but money talks and so does being organized.

The KS 5150 site is still what it was the day of the race, and it wasn't much to speak of then. No info about 2014. Nothing gives me warm fuzzies that they are coming back.

KC Tri has a date, early bird pricing, discount code, and proven track record (sort of - at least they try to have the race every year).

So, I'm now a KC Tri convert from KS 5150.

I'm in.

If anyone didn't get the email, it's likely because you are on a Constant Contact "opt out". Email [email protected] and they will send it to an alternative address pretty quickly.

Ryan, did the discount work for you? I think I might just bite the bullet and plan on KC, too. I'll be out at Clinton enough next year with IMKS and potentially the Lawrence Triathlon.

KC tri has posted course maps. Obviously these could change, and I'm pretty sure they just copied the maps from last year, but [speaking to Ryan's point] it's nice to see they're thinking about it and being proactive, even though we're nearly 7 months away.

Yeah, I'm probably in, too. I'm still waiting to see if the 5150 is announced prior to Jan. 1st, but I'm definitely leaning towards KC. It looks like the same bike course and run as 2 years ago when it was a 5150 race. Lots of 180 degree turns...

KC TRI for me.

They already have a date, open registration, a very spectator friendly course, and its only a 15 minute drive race morning!

Just speculating, but I wonder if WTC is considering the Lawrence Tri as their 5150 date (that is if they are even continuing the series)? This past year, the Lawrence Tri did not line up on the same date as any other 5150 events. We know that they are not averse to "taking over" an existing event. Same RD as previous 5150 and the timing would be more KC-area friendly as it would not conflict with KC Tri. Perhaps Silverback did Lawrence Tri last year as a bit of a "test run" to study registrations, interest, execution strategy, etc. Just a thought. (or maybe it's a hope as I think many would like to do KC Tri AND a local 5150 event). The fact that the Lawrence Tri seemed to kind of appear out of nowhere after the KC Tri cancellation debacle and seemed to be fed by the free registration offer makes me wonder about the longer term business strategy

If I were to race a Kansas 5150, I would rather race from the south side of Clinton vs the north. The logistics are better IMO.
